@gabriel Thinking about single board computers which could serve as a kind of local library. They would not be internet connected, but would broadcast their own local wifi, and have perhaps an sftp directory, and a local bulletin board. They could be in a sealed container on a roof, with a battery, a small charge controller, and a single small solar panel.Interestingly, by using NNTP, you could build a a kind of local usenet grid with multiple "dropboxes".If people's devices were set to autoconnect, whenever they drove, rode, or walked by a dropbox, whatever folders they were subscribed to would autoupdate to the latest version. And if the dropbox version was older, the dropbox would update from their device. Individuals could also update eachother. In this way, many different publications could update across a grid of dropboxes and individuals over time. This kind of thing would not appeal to many normies during normal times. But in a period of time where massive cyberattacks were taking down grids, and governments were enacting martial law style controls over some internet access, these kinds of grids would be a lifeline.

@atyh @gabriel You would probably need some mobile agents that automatically copied the contents down and up (including the updates). This once would have been unlikely. Nowadays, just a custom app. Still, this needs a critical mass to actually work.

@atyh @gabriel However, the main problem in a time "where governments were enacting martial law" is that they would be trivial to go for. Such device would be trivial to trace in the field. You could expect such a government to charge you for spreading disinformation / fake news / copyrighted content / child porn. And if what was already there was not deemed "bad enough" under that hypothetical new regime, the inquisitors could simply upload it before knocking at your door.

@platonides @gabriel Well, if we are at the point where federal agents are going door to door arresting people for "misinformation", i will have probably have been killed in action, ambushing their convoy, so im not sure it matters. In the mean time, Im interested in developing this kind of grid...

@atyh @gabriel you can put the public domain books from project guttenburg inside it and make it available via the bbs telnet server.. and it will be a library indeed..https://www.gutenberg.org/

@atyh @gabriel I by the way collect books too in pdf format as kind of an offline library for me.. i like the illustrated encyclopedia like books the most.. its not fully legitimate though i downloaded them from different torrents websites like scribd and internet archives before they are taken down.. but for a legitimate project project guttenburg books are totally legal they are public domain books..

Could be a really cool resource in areas that don't have internet. You could have a self-contained box with all it's own systems, and when you log into the wifi hotspot it would have a page that automatically opens up a hotspot page listing all the services available on the unit. Imagine, you're at a kids camp or something else with a local population but no Internet access, you could give people the ability to use their fancy smart phones for local communications despite lacking outside connectivity.
