Over on the other site, people keep telling me that a decentralized social media platform "could never" work. And yet... it is working? "Too many tradeoffs" they tell me. There are tradeoffs, but when I add them up, they seem to favor the decentralized platform over the centralized one. So strange.

@mmasnick even if they are serious about the tradeoffs, they wouldn't care about them if most people were here instead of there. excuses.

@mmasnick what exactly are the tradeoffs they cite that favor Twitter? My guess is most of them either imagined, or not actually tradeoffs.

@kkeller In this latest case, the guy claimed that content moderation couldn't work well in a distributed setting and "won't work for the majority of people"

@mmasnick I don't think it's everyone of course, but sometimes I suspect some of them, in part, fear the consequences of decentralization and the empirical claims about if it's workable are a cover, or wishful thinking.

@mmasnick I'll admit I think there are some major hurdles in the future—and particularly some nasty potential threats that haven't emerged—that make me wary of the long-term viability here, but it's still a hell of a lot more promising than going back to a centralized dictatorship.

@mmasnick I don't see the "decentralization" as a problem, since I can follow all the instances federated with mine, and this is a huge amount of people.
