A 1963 explosives test near #Hanford to determine the safest underground spot for disposing of radioactive waste.......Turns out they found 1400 such spots. And that's not counting the spent nuclear fuel and the tank waste. 1/2@histodons #nuclear #ColdWar

@histodons A sailor rolls a 55-gallon drum towards the edge of the USS Calhoun County. The ship dumped thousands of tons of ammunition and radioactive waste into the Atlantic during its service after World War II. Crew members report that they were sometimes given cotton gloves as protection. 2/2#NuclearWaste

@bojacobs @histodons I wonder if anyone has mapped any subsequent rate of hypothyroidism in women and girls in areas abutting the sea disposal sites. Anecdotally, there is a higher rate of this thyroid disease in women exposed, it appears, in the Pacifica to radiation carried from underwater nuke testing post WW2.

@pattykimura @histodons The spike in thyroid cancer was more from atmospheric nuclear testing, and was not just nearby Pacific nuclear test sites, but all major #nuclear test sites, and many production sites like #Hanford.

@bojacobs @histodons Actually looking at longer term chronic hypothyroid disease rather than the more acute thyroid cancer. I grew up in the Pacific, alive for the Starfish Prime test visible from Hawai'i (it set off alarms with an EMP, and made daylight) swam in the waters, ate fish and crab, and found the occasional blown glass net floats used by Japanese fishing boats on the other side of the Pacific.

@bojacobs @histodons As an aside, my grandmother died at Hiroshima, my forebears are from Fukushima, and my older brother grew up to be Director of Radiological Controls at Pearl before retiring a few years ago. It was his team that caught the leak from the USS Houston that had escaped notice for two years at Guam and Yokosuka, Japan.

@pattykimura @bojacobs @histodons At least radioactive waste is toxic for billions of years, and continually circulates in the environment, until it pervades every inch of the planet. 👍
