@fosserytech @faho @schuelermine You can't possibly vote for a Chromium-based browser as alternative to Firefox and still be pro-privacy, given how far Google is in controlling the entire internet. The whole discussion about Mozilla is highly controversial too, although I concur there are more private options than vanilla Firefox - f.e. Librewolf.I also always balance the blog content in terms of accessibility. I do even mention proprietary software.

@atoponce Brendan Eich founded Brave after he left Mozilla because it came out that he had donated against gay marriage. That means by using Brave, you are causing him to make more money he can then spend on homophobia. Not just say bad words in private, spend his actual money on it.It's also not just some random rank-and-file person working on the browser, it's the founder and CEO.

@faho I'm aware of the history and the controversy. The CEO may be homophobic, but the browser isn't. "Homophobe" describes the inventor, not the product. Also, how does using Brave make more money for Brendan? The crypto ads can be trivially disabled, although to be fair, they aren't by default.

@atoponce @faho using a product supports the organization that makes it. If he was no longer part of the organization maybe you could argue that it’s not the Homophobe Browser, but he is the CEO, using it supports him. It is a browser for people who are okay with homophobia.

@atoponce @PoliteMenace @faho let’s not split hairs here. If he was not part of the organisation, Brave would still be “the browser made by that homophobe”. And if for some reason folks find ways to excuse that, it’s the browser that has crypto in it. So “Scammy Homophobe Chrome”.

@konstantin @faho @PoliteMenace It's not splitting hairs. It's separating the person from the organization and the product.IMO, you're spending a lot of energy making decisions on what to use based on the political leanings of the inventor. I don't see this is as a practical approach for living. I'm sure I purchase food from farmers and ranchers that hold worse political views than Brendan Eich.

@fosserytech @Natanox @faho @schuelermine another good reason for using Firefox is it's fundamentally different under the hood from chrome. If everyone uses chrome (they almost already do) web developers will only check chrome compatibility and other web browsers will find it almost impossible to break into the market. Yes chromium is open source but google has veto over the project and can therefore push whatever web standards it likes.

@SkatorGaytor @Natanox @faho @schuelermine I also think that there should be more engines, not just Blink, don't get me wrong. The problem is that they sell user data. There's LibreWolf which is Firefox based and it does much better when it comes to privacy. I know it's not a mainstream browser but it isn't less usable than Firefox. UI is the same, and everything works the same (except the functions that require Mozilla account because those can't be implemented in a private way).

@Natanox @fosserytech @faho @schuelermine disagree, one can be "pro privacy" but not make it the dominating factor with the choice of the Webbrowser. Arguably for a lot of us, the Webbrowser is the single application we use most. I would expect most people to make this choice based on usability and UX things first and foremost.

@mxk @Natanox @faho @schuelermine it depends on threat model. If you're ok with Firefox harvesting your data that's fine.(Although I don't think LibreWolf - which is a hardened Firefox - is less usable)

@fosserytech @Natanox @schuelermine fun with the English language, but being "usable" and offering the usability that I am used to are two very different things. I have been using Presto Opera for ages and now use Vivaldi, simply because those do things, that no other browser does.Yes I would prefer there to be a true alternative to Blink, but as long as there is no browser that behaves like Opera, privacy concerns will probably not win me over.

@mxk @Natanox @schuelermine most people think about Chrome when it comes to browsers. Literally every browser can do what Chrome can (ok not Gnome Web but that's another topic). Opera and Vivaldi are completely different. They offer a ton of extra options that an average user doesn't need, just a few people.
