#TodaysWork More bass today and also will be playing with our new toy ‘Plasma Rack’ courtesy of our most excellent friends at Gamechanger Audio. Two of the new tracks are based around the Duesenberg D6 baritone guitar - fitted with custom House of Tone pickups through out vintage Leslie 145. It’s almost impossible to emulate the sound with FX pedals so it may end up coming out on the road with us. @simon A Leslie 145/7 lived in our practice space for a long time. It was enough hassle to move it across the room that I’m glad the one time I had a shot at one (for free, if I could move it), I couldn't do it—I would have been hauling that damn thing around for almost 40 years at this point! While I know it's not the same, the Strymon Lex hits the sweet spot for close enough/small footprint. I will admit I like v1 Lex a lot better when it's blended in parallel, something the v2 has built in.

@boxspring Ha! We have a flight case for it and are used to moving it now as we usually tour with a keyboard player with a real Hammond B3 or M100. I had a Lex V1 but sold it. May try the V2! The real deal sounds sooo great though. Our next live setup is big so we will see :) Here is Johnny with the B3. https://youtu.be/jC3VH8W3nwM

@boxspring @simon Pro Tip: At my studio, the Leslie lives on castors so it’s very easy to roll around the building. It actually lives in Studio A, but I roll it into Studio C (my room) at least once a month.

@simon Sounds so good! As does your guitar! We had the Leslie at our space for a B3 as well (the whole rig used to belong to Delaney Bramlett!) But the person who owned it found another home for it—the cost of maintenance was starting to mount up and it wasn't getting used as much as it should have. In it's place we now have a Fender Rhodes that someone left behind and then they became unreachable (!!!).

@fadersolo @simon Now you tell me! :-) I would have done that mod if it had been mine…I also would have made it so I could plug a guitar in, but it just had the big multicore cable that attached to the B3.

@boxspring @simon honestly, getting a box that lets you interface either line level or instrument level signals is a must if you ever have access to another Leslie. So many sounds turn out cool thru the box. Here’s a cover I produced where the verse vocals are doubled in stereo: one side clean the other side performed thru a 58 feeding the Leslie.https://youtu.be/v_LXZhlA-Ug

@fadersolo @boxspring Vocal sounds great!! I have this Leslie Combo unit. I have rewired it to make it safer but the connectors always fill me with fear and am going to convert this, our Hammond M100 and the Leslie to a safer system where mains doesn't go down the cable!

@fadersolo @simon Very nice! A bit more noticeably a Leslie than the first "vocal thru a Leslie" that comes to my mind—“Tomorrow Never Knows”. Your mention of the interface reminded me of another Beatles-adjacent story, told here: https://harrisonstories.tumblr.com/post/67113580755/in-march-and-october-1968-bill-halverson

@boxspring @simon epic story! The speed switch is essential. In my opinion, the Leslie sounds it’s absolute best when it’s ramping up or down between speeds at the just the right times.

@fadersolo @boxspring That is the sign of a great Hammond player - and we can’t forget the ‘brake’ mode: fast, slow and brake 👍

@fadersolo @simon Yep—I worked that a lot on my first "faux Leslie", an H&K Rotosphere. Between the speed switch and the brake switch you could be really expressive with it. I loved that thing, but it was noisy, huge, used a weird power supply and then after been stored in my closet for a decade, decided it wouldn't work anymore. No repair guys I've found will even look at them as to even change the tube requires fully dismantling the entire thing, and just that step is a major production.

@boxspring @fadersoloHa! I love all that shit. Dont think I have ever seen a RotoSphere, but now will spend 10 feverish minutes scanning the interweb 🤣The Leslie is quite easy to repair actually - all accessible. We have piles of analogue gear and apart from the tricky electronics, tent to maintain it all myself.Time: 30% maintenance, 40% admin and shit, 30% creating.

@fadersolo @simon I was gifted the Lexv1 which has more controls…which cuts both ways--I'm always thinking "maybe it could be a little better?". But the main thing that made me love the Lex was using a Boss LS-2 Line Selector to mix it in in parallel (a feature the new v2 has built in, but I haven't tried one yet). Not loving having the largish Lex _plus_ another pedal, I got a Keely Roto-Sonic, which does the blend (and a nice Univibe emulator), but doesn't have the speed/brake switches

@fadersolo @simon Now I've got a EHX Mod 11 on the regular board, which isn't as good as any of them just for rotary, but also has OK versions of loads of other modulation effects, so at a jam if someone calls for "Shattered", I've got a passable phase, a Police tune, passable flanger, etc. Jack of all trades, master of none. But when it counts, on a recording, I still pull out the Lex/LS-2 for rotary.

@boxspring @fadersolo Right, I need a picture of your board so I can geek out. I am in a transitional phase at the moment as we will be touring new material and will pick from the pile of shit when I know what I am doing. The only thing that’s constant is the Fultone Clyde Wha, Butler Tube Driver, Lehle Volume pedal and 1974 Echoplex EP-3 (yes, I still take it around with me) 🤣

@simon @fadersolo 30% creating is better than most! :-) I used to maintain my own gear (with help from my dad, an OG tube electronics guy, for anything in that realm that was beyond me) but I find myself with less time and in LA there's lots of good people, so I've started farming out the more and more work. I only ever glanced at the insides of the Leslie when we had it, but yeah, it looked like it wouldn't have been too hard to work on. Like old cars vs. new.

@simon @fadersolo I don't have a v2, just the v1. I really like the tone, it's very tweakable and the only problem for me was that for guitar I discovered I really like blending the Leslie sound with the original, which it didn't do on it's own, but the v2 does.

@boxspring @fadersolo Not many of the usual suspects on there which is great. What’s the blue box at the top - sideways - and why did you choose the Nemesis as opposed to the Timeline. I had one of these and soled it because I think they are going to revamp all these in line with the new LEX et al.

@simon @fadersolo The two things at the top (above the Distortron) are a Saturnworks dual momentary and a Donner volume/exp pedal. The switch is for stop/patch increment on the Loop Station and the Donner is sometimes attached to either the Nemesis or the Wet reverb for various things. Neither of them is used from where they are, I just put them there to travel, but they need to be placed off board to be useful. Just out of frame on the left is a remote switch for the Tensor….

@simon @fadersolo Probably the biggest downside to the Nemesis is that I've never dialed in a tape delay sound as good as the one in the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay. But the Empress was a little squirrelly—something like 1 in 300 times, you'd call up a preset and it would just give you some random settings until you power cycled it. Not great on stage. :-(

@simon @fadersolo For replicating an EP-3 (never owned one, but had one on loan for a few years) El Cap or Empress Tape Delay would be my picks. I wish I could get the Nemesis just a _little_ closer to it. Gonna go pull the Superdelay out now... :-)
