I feel like a lot of the hype for "machines are conscious now" even by smart people is the wish to be part of something big that's not just the climate catastrophe and crumbling infrastructures. It's a weird kind of futurism.

"But I was alive when machines became sentient" feels way better than "I went to work while the planet kept burning". It's a kind of psychological avoidance.

You can use these ideas to fill magazines and books and give talks and sell startups. Which keeps you busy while even in the richest countries in the world people go hungry and without shelter. While ecological, social and political systems crumble. But let's talk SciFi.

@tante its peak potentialful™ product marketing. There is no defined purpose, just "so much potential" that there isn't ever a concrete criteria for measuring success or failure. An infinite scene of smurfs saying "oooh, ahhh" as they watch fireworks.

Addition from Twitter (https://twitter.com/lasersushi/status/1626231019040034823):This avoidance is also fueled by the hope that some super smart "AI" might then solve our issues.

@tante also a geopolitical avoidance. the wheels have come off neoliberalism; AI is the means by which the 'big boys' can claim to be back in control of the future

@tanteCompletely agree. I can only quote Paris Marx' podcast title in relation to this, "Tech won't save us". These notions of technology inevitably leading to beneficial progress seem to be increasingly rooted in destructive longtermism and in reality cater only to the needs of their creators and their peer groups. More relevant use cases and benefits of automation and AI get overshadowed by toys allowing you to more efficiently serve capitalists and their interests.

@tante this is also the underlying rationalization myth at the heart of EA et al—shepherding in the deus ex machina of “agi” is the most ethical thing to do because it will solve everything else. Meanwhile everything is crumbling and the ultra-wealthy tech elite continue to be in control without having to give anything up or face any sort of reality.

@tante I am absolutely baffled that apparently many people look at current "AI" and actually think they know things and are conscious?! It is so entirely obvious that ML algorithms are nothing of the sort.

@tante I agree with all above, but looking for (even possibly implausible) ways out of our dilemma is one of the few things I see as a positive to this.

@tante a delusional kind of futurism ... which, sadly, is the most common kind of futurism, and thus, not weird, but normal.

@tante Yes, but I notice that critics of LLMs etc. are easily painted into the corner of worrying about the bookselling singularity when they try to point out very tangible problems LLMs generate for society.

@tante I feel like it would be less creepy if machines were actually conscious now, but they're not. It's just the ghost that people imagine for themselves. 2023's "AI" is just proxying the Wisdom of the Crowd through a machine oracle. There's no consciousness there except what originates in the minds of the human trainers and content filterers.

@tante also tech billionaires not understanding subtext and mistaking sentient AI wiping out humanity for a real life apocalyptic scenario instead of the allegory for climate catastrophe it actually is.

@tante I also really get amused seeing the really odd logical or even technical limiting arguments to include sentience. Like, yeah, I hope they realise what they create are fallacies, and malpractice if they make frameworks to include them to look "right". It feels like every recent hype event all over again, give it characteristics is does not possess to fulfil your own hopes and dreams (Cloud, blockchains etc.).

@tante Reading the comments it seems that most people didn't read your post as did II read it as people are paying attention to AI and other news du jour instead of focusing on the existential threat of global warming.

@tante it’s strange though, all the dark mountain climate doomers… I hear it a lot and then don’t see them do anything besides post something on social media… and there is plenty one can do… but it’s so much easier to merely complain.

@tante suddenly I surrounded by people who are raving about the artistic potential of AI, it’s not surprising , I live in the S.F. Bay Area, which is the heart of techno utopia
