This just keeps happening to so many albums I loved back in the day. It seems like every couple weeks another one comes up missing or unavailable on #Spotify. But this isn't a defense of #applemusic. It's yet another plea to just buy physical or DRM-free digital media! #Music #Streaming

@killyourfm it is abig reason why I stopped usibg spotify, another reson for me was how unrelible it was. Constent chrashing and sometimes I couldn't listen to anything as I hadn't been online for amounth and it made me redownload everything#streaming #music #applemusic #spotify

@Twelve Yea I hear you. My main music driver is PlexAmp which is my own music collection. But Spotify is SO GOOD for discovery. But I'm also very sick of this crap.

@killyourfm yes indeed... I still buy music, storage is cheap so I can even have all my music with me in areas with poor or no connectivity.

@killyourfm I have the same problem. I even took on a journey to try Deezer and Apple Music from September last year till a week ago. They all suffer the same, just different artists, albums are affected. At the end came back to Spotify for only 1 reason: working Linux app.

@killyourfm It is why I use Discogs.com to look up the albums I love on CD - sometimes I don't even open the plastic wrap. Just as a backup.

@johanbove That's a great tactic. I've been doing the same, but with vinyl. That satisfies my physical collection needs, and then bandcamp or iTunes for the DRM-free digital stuff (so thankful iTunes still does that).

@killyourfm @johanbove Yeah, I agree. Thanks to iTunes, I've slowly been able to move away from Spotify to building my own DRM-free collection.I am bit worried what will happen when they do eventually replace it, but it does seem like the store functionality will also available in the Apple Music app.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211330

@killyourfm @johanbove Just asking, have you ever managed to get iTunes running properly on Linux through WINE?It seems that a lot of people just get a black screen when they try that. 😞 https://fosstodon.org/@thelinuxcast/109866055668773725

@ProfessorCode @johanbove Honestly, I've never tried, but now I have to. Previously, I just purchased on my Mac and shot them across the network to my Plex server, then play everything using PlexAmp across all my devices. But I recently went Linux full-time, so I need to find a solution too.

@killyourfm @johanbove Cool! I'll be looking forward to hearing about it.I myself have managed to completely migrate to Linux for a couple of years now, but this is one thing I still need to use Windows for. It's quite annoying. 😬

@killyourfm also happens when you move to a different country. As soon as you switch over billing to your new location: boom, a good chunk of your own playlists turn grey.

@fk It’s so ridiculous. Music shouldn’t fall victim to invisible borders.

@killyourfm Hi there. I've been making playlists & that is something I've noticed! I'll curate a list, save it, leave it alone for a while. Sometimes I'll come back and 1 or 2 songs are greyed out. I'll go searching for a copy that isn't region locked. For some lists that are 200+ songs long, it ends up feeling like "maintenance". I've even had to upload my own legal copies of my music just so I can be a completist.

@killyourfm physical media FTW. My recent experience: file corruption on my music server: no physical media for a purchase from iTunes: title is no longer listed in iTunes: what do I do now? This isn't a streaming or subscription, I paid outright for this "album" but only in digital format, I don't have a physical format, the store seems to have delisted the album, so, I guess they've got my money, I've got nothing.

@killyourfm back when I used it (before they put podcasts first) this usuqlly meant a new version of the album was added, «removing» the songs from the album I had used originally. Try searching for the songs again, they might still be there in some form.

@killyourfm And this solves the challenge with streaming music collections: our kids cannot discover it without a screen or user account. To discover what the music was their parents and family loved and danced to. I have very fond memories going through my parent's record collection as a kid and I was thrilled to inherit part of my uncle's vinyl. Being able to hand over something personal and physical like that to the next generation cannot be done through the Web.
