@nolasco Take the third position of having both a Linux and Windows machine within arm's reach at all times. That way you can do Linux shit or Windows shit by swiveling your chair a few degrees.

i've essentially kind of done that, only i'm trying to use my linux laptop to run this engraving software and keep it next to my engraver so i don't need to constantly keep switching rooms from my bedroom with my desktop to the spare room with the engraver. i tried zorinOS and ubuntu based off google and the program doesn't launch in either wine setup i tried

@nolasco So this is the red pill that FOSS spergs don't want to take: if you have any real equipment of any kind it will not work on Linux. You need to use Windows for that shit. You will spend the next 50 fucking hours fiddling with wine only to get it to kind of half work, sometimes. If you're using your computer for anything that translates into something in matter world, Linux is not your operating system

@clora @nolasco They had to spend untold hours getting the system into a state where the CNC machine would accept Linux instructions. Half the features the CNC machine has probably don't work on Linux because they aren't a "standard." To get the CNC machine to do any of the fancy non-standard things that it can do you need to install some special bloatware written by the manufacturer for Windows.I've been down this path a thousand times and I done seent it. Here's how to calculate how many hours it will take to get real hardware to work on Linux: 2^j hours, where j is the number of times the Stack Exchange Linux sperg uses the word "just" (as in, "you just need to...")

@clora @nolasco Whenever this topic comes up I always have an image in my mind of some overworked emergency room doctor hooking up a gunshot wound patient to a machine that was manufactured 25 years ago, and only works on Windows ME for some bizarre reason, and as this doctor is trying to save this dude's life, there's a Linux sperg standing next to the doctor, lecturing him about Richard Stallman's peculiar definition of "free" software.

@nolasco @NEETzsche Wine is just a software compatibility layer, it doesn't know how to direct the output from an emulated driver (if any) to a hardware device, because the emulator is agnostic about the hardware unless you have a kernel-level linux driver for your engraver that wine can deal with. And if that driver existed, there would probably also just be a linux version of the software you're using.

When you’re talking about industrial equipment, it’s usually interfaced with a non-Internet connected computer running Windows NT 3.1 or some other meme version of Windows. And there’s always some bizarre reason why it won’t work with anything else. This is the case even with light industrial equipment.

@ceo_of_monoeye_dating @Yellow_Heart @NEETzsche @nolasco i mean sure, if it makes sense in-context—honestly though, i'm fundamentally pretty unconcerned about all this. there are a lot of different paths and all of them are fine.

In this thread I just keep picking random versions of Windows nobody uses out of a hat to stress my point on this topic. Earlier I posted an example of an emergency room doctor using life-saving equipment that requires Windows ME. You have no clue how real this shit is. People like to bitch about “IT guys” who just memorize rotes to keep the machines running like Adeptus Mechanicus, but these people are immensely useful and we just can’t get rid of them. And we shouldn’t be disparaging them for that reason.

@clora @Yellow_Heart @NEETzsche @nolasco >most people with something to offer seem to avoid doing so because they're worried someone will respond as though they're being patronized or insulted.Yeah, this is one of those places where it's totally cool to step on people's feet a little so nobody is worried about that. Also, it should be worth noting that a lot of people who are total fuckups can still be learned from. If someone has completely and totally failed at life, their philosophy can often be taken as "a philosophy that leads one to fail at life."

there are drivers for windows, and for macos which was why i was naively hopeful it would work for my ubuntu desktop. i am just going to partition my drive and install a free copy of windows 11 to it for now. idk if i could get it to work under kvm-qemu and based on the advice in this thread i am not going to try it.

I have an old ThinkPad with Windows 7 on it. It’s hooked up to a router which, in turn, is NOT connected to the Internet. Every piece of equipment I get connects either to the laptop directly or to that router.Problem solved. There are zero security problems because they have to physically break into my garage to “hack” this.

You can reduce the complexity of this task by skipping steps 1 and 2 and install Windows. You need to make a real argument for using Linux in this context and so far you haven’t.

When it comes to industrial equipment and sophisticated equipment (medical equipment, 3D printers, engravers, etc) it’s unironically just best to go by the guidelines they set instead of fighting those guidelines. Trying to install Windows in a VM and do a bunch of USB passthrough shit is the definition of fighting the guidelines.

@roboneko @NEETzsche @nolasco yeah dual boot is a pain if you actually plan to use both systems. who wants to reboot to run a separate command. Running windows in a VM at least you can just tab out of the windows window back to linux when you are done. Seems worth the effort to try and get it running in a vm. If it won't work in a vm or figuring out the hardware passthrough is too much falling back to dual boot is always an option, albeit IMO a suboptimal one.

i mean, i might do that at some point in the future. what you're saying doesn't sound like a terrible thing to figure out for me to understand at some point. i want to figure out how to do all the things you're suggesting (easy or hard) with my own home lab setup. for right now that sounds like a time investment and i'm sleepy and tired so just gonna go with the easy option. in the future though who knows i want to learn how this stuff works i'm very ignorant about how all this works right now which i want to fix

@nolasco @NEETzsche not to run software that requires direct hardware access, that usually fails. I do have to say I'm impressed with how wine has evolved the last few years. Gaming on linux works quite well now, so maybe in a few years, there will be a stable way of accessing peripheral hardware better...
