Fast Company's @harrymccracken writes about why he's not leaving Twitter yet.Basically, he knows it's a dumpster fire -- no argument. However, he's also been on the service for 16 years, and can't find a 1:1 replacement. Then he gets to talking about Mastodon and he reaches the same conclusion that I have: Mastodon may superficially resemble Twitter, but in no way is it exactly like Twitter.True -- but the "old" Twitter is dead.@fediversenews https://www.fastcompany.com/90848516/reasons-to-quit-elon-musk-twitter-and-why-i-havent

@atomicpoet @harrymccracken @fediversenewssorry but the only thing preventing fedi from being Twitter (and so much more) is more people. that would bring with it faster development of all the good stuff it currently lacks (outside of the users), which is more than made up for by the bad stuff it lacks.what's frustrating is that we lack a movement to switch, or at least all try only fedi for a week or month etc. people try individually or just complain. this is a collective problem.

"Twitter" means different things to different people. For me, Twitter will always be that hardscabble app that it was in 2008. This was when its innovations were driven by 3rd party apps and end users -- and Twitter itself was most happy as a service to provide an API to make it happen. That version of Twitter had been on life support since 2010, and finally gave up the ghost last month. So to me, Twitter is dead. However, others may perceive Twitter differently.@fediversenews

Of course, I know about a few members of "stan" Twitter who arrived on the Fediverse, saw nothing to their liking, then promptly left. The Fediverse doesn't have "stan" culture yet.Who knows if it ever will.In this sense, the Fediverse does not replace Twitter.@fediversenews

@chrisIt comes from an Eminem song. A Stan is a person who is obsessed to an unhealthy degree. Like a super duper toxic fan.I might be missing some subtlety because I've never heard it used in the context of "stan culture."Maybe someone else can elucidate.@atomicpoet @fediversenews

@wjmaggosIs it really so bad if people bounce off of masto? Maybe it just isn't for them. I agree the bird site is super problematic and that masto could be more newbie friendly, but maybe folks bounce off for a legitimate reason. Maybe they were never going to like it here.

@bezorpthat raises the question of what the fedi/Twitter is or what people want it to be. if there's going to be a dominant place for news to flow, I want it to be decentralized like the fedi. I think it was bad for it to be governed by one company even if they tried to look out for the public interest, but much worse if it's run by Elon. I think a news flow that's decentralized could be very good for society, if we also become more responsible in what we share and it became more universal.

@bezorp @wjmaggos Agreed. I get why Twitter cares about a 24/7 go-go-go-grow-cycle, the poor thing has advertising to sell and people waiting in line to distract, but what’s the rush to push the Fediverse into a similar position?

@aethervision @bezorpmy rush is to displace the corrosive effect centralized control and ads have on how we understand the world and process opinions. journalists are now afraid of upsetting Elon etc, else they turn the algos against them. this has been true in a less concentrated way about all big media. when we decentralize attention completely, where being on cable news isn't special, where what matters is that the public shares your video segment, quality wins over money/connections.

@wjmaggos @bezorp My experience is you can’t drown out shouting with more shouting. For me, the Fediverse has been a better place to connect but part of that is slowing down the velocity of the bonobo algorithm to something that doesn’t just react. You need quiet and intentionality for that. Speaking evolutionarily, the dinosaurs may be dying out, but I don’t know that we need to jump from small mammals to sabretoothed cats in a fortnight.

@aethervision @bezorpmore people doesn't change anything if you don't follow them. the idea is not to add algorithms or advertising.

@wjmaggos"""if there's going to be a dominant place for news to flow, I want it to be decentralized like the fedi. I think it was bad for it to be governed by one company"""Hard agree with this. I was never a super twitter person to begin with, so I don't feel the urgency like you do maybe. Like I never got my news, alerts, gossip, etc from twitter (though I realise that in some in municipalities that this is more common).

@wjmaggosI *feel* like (dangerous, I know) if enough people start using masto etc, that what's more likely is that twitter & co. might eventually start integrating with ActivityPub in an effort to grab a slice of the decentralised pie (band name).Anyway, I agree it's---sorry, I'd go on, but I've been reminded that I need to start making dinner
