None of us here know _exactly how_ bad it is but there's an intuitive sense that normal people have that a train tank of carcinogens derailing and then being burned into the atmosphere and water is pretty bad and a thing to be worried about

...eh I'm doubtful. They did all of this really fast. Probably all railroad baron "scientists" and EPA dumb-shits (same thing; EPA is an advocacy for industry). I doubt they had the best minds on it. Were they facing a Beirut style explosion? Honestly, that would probably be better than burning it all off. The rail company would immediately have to pay for everyone's homes and they would have all been evacuated.They could/probably should have shoveled a shit ton of dirt onto the cars and fire suppressants and smothered it out. You can dig up soil and move it to the middle of nowhere Nevada. Once that shit is in the air, it's going to rain high ph water for months. They're already saying insane amounts of dead fish/wildlife.Everything about this disaster benefited the railroad companies. The fact it isn't on the news at the levels of the BP disaster shows how much power the railroads still have over American media.

@djsumdog @bot @Moon vinyl chloride(chloroethylene) is nasty stuff. A quick look at it's NFPA fire diamond will tell you that. It's rated at a 3 for health hazards(same as chlorine gas), a 4 for flammability(highest possible rating), and a 2 for instability. Strong carcinogen.It's a serious chemical.Burning it will produce mostly gaseous HCl(which will form hydrochloric acid on contact with water, meaning very low pH rain), and carbon monoxide.
