I've been in Leicester today visiting various extinct reptiles, some for work, some for fun. I've seen lots of cool stuff, but highlights include a cast of Jane (and its pathological toe), the Rutland cetiosaur and the "Barrow Kipper" (actually Rhomaleosaurus). Looking forward to getting home and crunching some exciting new (to me, anyway) information. #dinosaurs #MarineReptiles

@markwitton It's a great local museum. The 'Barrow Kipper', by the way, is no longer Rhomaleosaurus. Some guy by the name of Smith (2015) referred it to the new genus Atychodracon. The paper is open access here: https://palaeo-electronica.org/content/2015/1146-plesiosaurus-megacephalus

@markwitton how much of the certiosaur is known roughly?

@john @markwitton About 40% is fossilised bone, but not all of it is mounted in the skeleton. See this diagram from: https://www.leicestermuseums.org/media/cmhmoasc/dinosaur-gallery-activity-sheet.pdf

@AdamStuartSmith Oh man, that that Smith guy? I'd just ignore him. Always rolling into town, outdating museum panels left and right with his new-fangled "science".

@AdamStuartSmith @john I wonder where that figure came from. Looking at the specimen and diagram, I felt like it was a lot less than 40% - but obviously it depends how you're totting things up, whether you're factoring left and right etc.

@markwitton You jest, but I'm pretty sure the rhomaleosaurid in the Stuttgart museum is still labelled Rhomaleosaurus victor although Peggy and I renamed that in 2010! I haven't been to see it for a few years though so maybe they've updated it by now. As I curator I'm sympathetic!

@markwitton @john I don't know, but I'd guess Mark Evans had some input, as he was the curator at Leicester for many years and was involved in the relatively recent remounting of the specimen. So, it might not be 'published'.

@AdamStuartSmith @john I wonder if it was just counting bones - can't have been volume.

@markwitton That photo of Jane is really cool; the heterodonty is really obvious! Is the difference between premaxillary and maxillary teeth in tyrannosaurs more distinct in juveniles/ younger specimens?

@Palaeojules In some respects it might be the opposite as the maxillary teeth haven't fattened up yet - they do this en route to adulthood. But I think the premax teeth must widen a bit too, given their proportions here, so maybe it remains the same overall.

@Palaeojules Also, I think there's a bit of tooth slippage all around here, so that might be factoring into their appearance too. Lots of tooth grooves visible on the labial surface which probably want tidying away into the jawbones.

@markwitton @john Who knows. Completeness estimates rarely come with an explanation and can be wildly different depending on the methodology. I've been looking into this re: Titus the T. rex, which is now on long term loan to @GeorgeTheGorilla. I'm trying to work out if it's possible to introduce a standard (or standards) for measuring and comparing completeness of fossil skeletons.

@mike @john @markwitton If you're referring to the osteogram, it's from one of the museum's activity booklets. I don't think, from memory, it's also a sign in the gallery. Could be.

@AdamStuartSmith @john @markwitton Oh that's a shame. To create something so informative, then fumble the ball on the line and not post it in the gallery: that would be ... disappointing.

@AdamStuartSmith @john @markwitton the radius and ulna look so weird on the mount. Give they are pretty much all made up, why make them up like that?

@mike @PeterFalkingham @AdamStuartSmith @john Over on Twitter, I've asked Mark Evans which animal this was based on - I had similar thoughts about the sculpted bones when seeing it yesterday.

@markwitton @PeterFalkingham @AdamStuartSmith @john Can you get Mark over here, where we can *all* interrogate him? I mean, if that prospect isn't enough to attract him to Mastodon, what will be?
