#Mastodon does not use any algorithm for 'sorting' posts but instead shows them to you on a chronological order, so based on the time(stamp)Platforms like #Twitter, #Facebook etc don't really use a 'timeline' anymore but rather a compiled feed they serve youOn Mastodon a timeline really means timeline! No need for an AI to decide what you see, you can do that puurfectly yourself :blobcathighfive:

@stux agree that this default is what many want but, I would also argue that there is potential for #mastodon apps to innovate and offer different ways of customising a user’s own timeline. Apps like #ivory and #IceCubeApp can have unique propositions to differentiate themselves

@stux Since the user's server is the one constructing the timeline, we can not be so definite. So I think. True, it is not happening now. But who can say abt tomorrow. But the pt is, the user can migrate (wo loss of connectivity) to another instance if the algorithm is not acceptable.

@stux Facebook's feed has been particularly odious lately. Often seeing posts that are 3-5 days old in the top 10 or so of the timeline. They are making their own product kind of useless.

@stux I know folks are divided on federated search, but i have to say that the combination of existing personal search and the timeline make it really easy to re-find things.I've had several occasions of telling my partner about a post and then being able to scroll or search right back to it! Twitter, Facebook, etc going to algorithmic feeds can be so annoying! All the time there posts dissappear into oblivion as soon as they scroll offscreen.

@stux #socialdiscovery has suffered a bit although and requires the #extensive use of #hashtags to help spread the #word and have the same #reach. This is possibly problematic because #hashtags aren't moderated at all, allowing other parties to infiltrate and overwhelm feeds by spamming irrelevant posts with a specific hashtag."That's the #freespeech," some would say. Well, others say it degrades the quality of your #timeline. Some would reply that you should just follow the people that you want and associate with #instances and #federations that you are interested in.It is a difficult thing, and the idea of #groups as some has proposed might be a good idea. Because I myself don't see anything relevant in the #hashtags in the #mastodon app. Where an algorithm could help a bit, but then again, that information needs to be extracted from somewhere, again coming down to #privacy and #moderation.I would like to see a page of hashtags people I follow are following.

@stux I understand that. However, a very (!!) cool new feature would be to support user created algorithms. Many peopel follow way to many people which produce way too much content to even skim.I'd love a system where as I read things I can easily indicate how interesting the item is to me. This could be data used by machine learning to assist in helping surface the most relevant TO ME items.Naturally this would be a view independent of the default chronological feed.#personal-feed

@stux I don't think that statement is accurate for the Explore option, where it seems to be filtering the comments based on boosts. The "comments" there should be something catchier. Much as I hate Twitter, the idea of a "tweet" has resonance, but Mastodons don't tweet.Appeal to the German masterminds? Maybe there's a suitable coinage in German that could become viral? What does a #German Mastodon say?

@stux beyond the fact you can do that yourself: you also better manage the time you spend on the platform. You spend the time **you** need to consume content **you** chose VS you are incentivised to spend as much as time as possible on a content you do not chose .

@stux no, they show a timeline: I force them to. This can always be done. Youtubedotcom slash feed slash subscriptions, for instance; "following" on twitter plus visiting current favourite 20-30 peops etc. People have to grow up & make the internet suit them. They choose to be slaves to it. I don't know anybody except me who blocks all phone notifications (except actual calls). I look when I fancy. Works fine. It's adults choosing, not social networks forcing.

@stux ranked feeds can be quite useful, but the optimization metric matters. A good feed would be ranked by some function of relevance. The bird site and Facebook rank by expected revenue and to maximize time on site. This doesn’t optimize for relevant content, which is limited in volume, it optimized for emotional response, which causes you to stay and had infinite volume. Net: ranking would be ok with good ranking models.

@stuxI always react that Mastodon absolutely uses an algorithm. Chronological order is an algorithm. It’s just a particularly stupid (or simple if you prefer) algorithm that cannot help you get to the content that you want to see. That’s for better or worse. These days I’m having to do an awful lot of scrolling to get to any interesting posts as people are using hashtags a bit liberally.
