Don’t panic! Here’s what you’re gonna do:1.Make sure people can see you: fill out your profile, using hashtags so you’ll come up in searches. Use a picture for your header and pfp… it doesn’t have to be of you (although you look great!) but at least you won’t look like a bot. Then, do an #introduction post that other people will helpfully share.

Next thing you want to do is find your people. If you had a lot of mutuals, they’re probably wandering around here somewhere. The places to find them are 1. hashtags; 2. following other people who you know too.I’ve only been here since April & full time since last month, but I’ve already found lots of my friends! You will too

Your timeline:If you’re on a desktop*, you can see your Home, Local, and Federated timelines. Home is just people you follow. Local is your instance/server. Federated is everybody. Most common complaint I hear is that it’s “boring” here or “no one is here.” That’s because you’re not following anyone! As you find your peeps, the Home timeline will populate itself and conversation will start humming.*and you should be, it’s so much better! If not, try Tusky or another app

Now post normally*! Remember there’s no algorithm, so: 1. People can’t see you if you don’t say anything; 2. Boost things/people liberally so other people can find them while everyone is looking for each other; 3. Use hashtags* Use Content Wrappers for nudes/politics/Twitter mentions/anything that might bug somebody* Use alt-text to describe your pictures* Use CamelCase for hashtag so screen readers can read them

@stephstephking I've seen a lot of guides and this one is my favorite. An extra cool thing I found is you can now follow hashtags. When you do so it puts those posts in your Home feed. I followed 2 or 3. When Musk first took over I followed the Introduction for over a week. It was a lot but it helped me find a ton of people I wouldn't have otherwise. Then I unfollowed it to clean up my Home feed. But I still follow #WritingCommunity.

@babylontales Yeah there are a lot of detailed tips (shoutout https://fedi.tips/) but I was trying to cover "here are the things to do on your first day" for folks who just disembarked
