If you want to see how TechSoup is railroading NGOs/Charities into a full dependence on proprietary software (note: they actively avoid mentioning #FOSS options), see attached screenshot. I consider the organisation to be a menace, disingenuously misinforming vulnerable organisations to benefit its real funders, 'big tech'. If there was any justice, their name would be mud. They are a horrible, self-serving organisation selling themselves as a trusted ally to the tech-ignorant.

@lightweight God forgive me for saying this, but Office 365 is a hell of a good deal for a small organization. it's not even about the software, but about the services you get with it.13 bucks a month per user gets you all the typical office software + email hosted by microsoft. it sets up from scratch in like an hour, it's so easy to set up your SPF + DKIM + DMARC records that anyone with basic computer skills could do it, it's got MFA out of the box. there's no (or very little) ongoing maintenance, just pay the bill and the domain registration once a year.adobe can suck satan's cock in hell though

@skylar @lightweight remember, freetards can’t imagine someone doesn’t have 9 hours an hour to manage their infrastructure

@skylar @lightweight haven't used 365 in forever, what does it have over libreoffice at this point? 365 still keeps patching zero-day vulnerabilities involving malicious documents, Microsoft is horrible at security.

@bleedingphoenix @lightweight well bill gates (who is the antichrist) moves the fucking buttons around every other month just to screw with you and drive up help desk calls about "my outlook is messed up"there's no cute unofficial mascot, but at least no one can accuse you of being a furryMS office software is bloated, shitty, and prone to fail in unexpected waysbut outlook still somehow sucks less than other mail clients

@skylar unfortunately, I disagree entirely with you on your assertion about MSO 364. Any organisational dependence on the Microsoft corporation is a demonstration of negligent governance. If nothing else because of the reasons explained here: https://davelane.nz/mshostage and here https://davelane.nz/proprietaryI do, however, agree that Adobe sucks, although perhaps not entirely with the way you've expressed the sentiment. .

@skylar @lightweight >moves the buttons around every other monthah yes, the modern urge to change and create dependency. love it.>at least no one can accuse you of being a furryi'm a Sonic fan, i've been through that already. cool mascot design, looks like a Freedom Planet character.>outlook still somehow sucks less than other mail clientsif the protonmail app didn't charge money to host multiple accounts i'd have no complaints with it. my experience with outlook is very lukewarm.

@lightweight i agree putting all your eggs in one vendor's basket is bad news, but i think it's way more of a threat for large organizations that do intensive work with custom plugins and integrations with other software. small organizations that lack the budget and resources to manage something more independent. even if the email's hosted through office 365, an organization owning their own domain and using it for email is still a step up in independence compared to just using gmail/consumer outlook; you can point your MX records anywhere you want should you need to.i run my own mail server and i'm really not seeing how it's going to be feasible for a small organization, for example the Sneedville Church of Christ, with 5 users: the pastor, the office manager, and 3 volunteers.

@wizzwizz4 probably not, as it would require a lot of resources - like what a gov't regional development fund might be applied to, if gov'ts were smart about tech and saw #FOSS as digital 'critical infrastructure' and funded it like they fund physical critical infrastructure. Sadly, pretty uniformly around the globe, they're not. Not even slightly. They're almost all entirely in the pockets of big tech. Corruption is pervasive.

@lightweight @wizzwizz4 Well, EU governments are increasingly (if slowly) veering towards FOSS, and it looks like they also publish about it.NGOs could learn from this.
