The advice I see most people make about Mastodon is to follow more people, but I’m about to make the opposite advice: follow fewer people. Stick with me here. “Doomscrolling” and endlessly scrolling didn’t happen because the posts are bad. It happened because everyone learned to spend their time on a single app/site. We need to spend more time on more sites, and a timeline with endless content is counter to that. Let your timeline be empty sometimes. #meta

@misty There's one thing Better Tweetdeck did that I dearly wish the Mastodon web UI would do -- let me clear a column, the same way I can clear notifications. (Or with fewer clicks. Fewer clicks would be great actually. One click is ideal.)Sometimes I just want to glance and see if there's anything new, move on if not. Blank columns make that easy.

@dsalo I wish that were more normal! Doesn’t seem like something most apps are interested in building.

@misty I should experiment with Javascript and CSS. There's gotta be a way.

@misty We’ll put. I decided on a limit of 100 follows. I groom the list based on a very subjective criteria but what I see slowly but surely improves.

@misty @dsalo I came to say the same thing! Also, you should be able to "Archive" posts—the support app we used for Twitter had this, and I realized it was so much healthier to "dismiss" a tweet instead of staring at it.

@misty Yeah, I'm muting a LOT of people just to make this not feel like work.

@misty @neven My take on this is to *be following* fewer people (I did this on Twitter, too, and it worked well for me there). But I don’t think *following* is the problem, I think it’s the hesitation to *unfollow*. It too often feels like a personal slight, but it shouldn’t. Follow and unfollow liberally.

@misty okay, but: if i followed that advice, i wouldn’t be illuminated by this kind of thought provoking content that i ultimately disagreed, but made me consider for a pleasant minute

@a @neven This is why I appreciate that most sites don't let you see someone's follower lists and don't have "follows you" badges. It leads to these kinds of social stresses. Twitter and Mastodon are outliers here.

@misty I really appreciate that the timeline here ends. No more new content for a while. Not even on a refresh. I reach the end, and can go about my day.

@misty Agree with this! Also, an endless timeline (even if it’s full of great content) doesn’t allow us to become bored, which is a state of mind that’s important for creativity, self-reflection & relaxation.

@misty Eh; I was off Twitter for a bit before getting to Mastodon - and even when not hear, I heard about the potential of the U.S. not getting a speaker of the house via the StackExchange questions alluding to it before I actually heard about the news at all.Doomscrolling is, to me, just scrolling in a world where doom happens.

@misty in fairness, masto doesn't add extra posts people have liked and sponsored to your timeline and doesn't shove follow recommendations in your face, so you probably want to be a little more proactive about following.but i definitely agree that you shouldn't try to replicate the endless content experience of twitter.

@misty @rowan_johnson But isn’t that what Lists and Hashtag searches are for?I have lists that I'm getting pretty happy with for certain groups and I've got some hashtag searches that pull all the precise subject stuff I want.I agree, doomscrolling is the mindkiller --- but following lots of folks has exposed me to some really cool posts that I probably wouldn't have seen... and helped me waste tons of time I really don't have to waste... It is the circle of life it seems...

@misty I dig that! I follow nearly no-one but instead just follow #'s here that way its about the vibe of the # and I have control of content more
