One complaint I get about OpenBSD is no vscodium, was looking at the build dependecies and it looked feasable to port but it depends on fucking alsa-libs. There is no alsa anything on OpenBSD and why would an IDE for software development need alsa??Why can't people just be content with vim or emacs? You can use vim, emacs, doom emacs, spacemacs, xemacs, spacevim, neovim, codeblocks, geany, kakoune, texlive, texworks, pycharm, glade, qt-creator, kdevelop, gnome-builder, intellij, and even ghidra for reverse engineering code or hexedit and hexcurse. Of course some soydev will say, "nobody really uses those anymore".cc @theorytoe @dcc

@rootbsd @theorytoe @dcc I've been challenging myself to use emacs exclusively these past few months, and I'm really enjoying it. I need to get on that BSD train, though. I haven't tried it yet.

@MuuhdistMonk @theorytoe @dcc I prefer doom emacs because its nice and useable out of the box and will run decent enough on even the most potato of PCs and laptops.

@rootbsd @theorytoe @dcc #Emacs is one of the best alternatives to #VSCodium. You might have to remember some key combinations (or use a few other tools), but other than that, it can be as easy to use.

@rootbsd Counter arguement: Why does anyone need to change their coding workflow because of an Operating System? Why can't people just be content with vim or emacs? You have all these things setup in vscodium that you setup for a system that has compatability with Windows and Mac users, why can't you just spend a bunch of time retooling your entire workflow to use OpenBSD?Literally nobody wants to do that, even if vim and emacs has advantages. If you are already in a project team that is heavily influneced by vscodium you'll be the odd one out if you can't use a plugin or interface that only works with codium. Are you really wanting to do that? Do you really want to be the guy spilling his spaghetti when you can't do something because of an Operating System.

@splitshockvirus The main crux of op as well is porting it looks like a pain but of hard linux-specific dependencies. Also if it was such a big deal, why has nobody bothered to port it in the community?

@rootbsd They want to use OpenBSDWho's they, and why do they want to use OpenBSD if they are coding? Who is coding for a company, and is also worried that their desktop needs to be secured against State Actors from cyber attacks?

@splitshockvirus Good question, I don't know but its been brought up before. I always tell people if OpenBSD doesn't have what you need for desktop use, just use Linux. I use Arch Linux, Debian, and Alpine alongside BSDs, its not a big deal. Everything has strengths and weaknesses.

@rootbsd It's like complaining that TempleOS doesn't have MS Visio. You could attempt to reason with people who are using MS Visio and want it in TempleOS, by saying there are nice alternatives to that diagramming softwareâ„¢.Or you could just tell them to fuck off and use a different OS.I'm of the later, I'm not going to attempt to say someone of their requirements if they are dead set on them.

@splitshockvirus I mean you can get an OpenBSD desktop that is running as smooth as a Linux one and not be able to tell the difference, just less ports thats all because some projects are just not very portable and the effort involved may not be worth it to someone not get paid. So on OpenBSD do porting just as an exercise to make them better devs I think, otherwise why torture yourself (i.e. KDE5, wayland, plasma and qt framework + webengine, really pain in the ass stacks to port.)

@splitshockvirus @rootbsd No one should change their entire workflow if they want to try out an operating system. As a past windows 10 user, I myself wanted to shift to linux because I was trying out neovim, which had better support in linux. You should change your tools if YOU WANT too, not because you feel like it. If someone really wants openbsd, they probably would change text editors, heck I changed my os for a terminal editor.

@la_ninpre @theorytoe @dcc It's out of my experience level, but it would be great for someone to port it. Not me, I'm happy with doom emacs.
