White House now says three objects shot down with uber-expensive missiles likely "benign balloons". And may never be recovered. One missile missed and ended up in Lake Huron. $400,000 each.

@inklings I'm saying they should have done what they've always done in the past absent serious threats: Put out a flight advisory and not shooting at non-threatening aerial objects that are all over the place.

@lauren Yes sure … just let them hang out in civilian aircraft airspace right after the Chinese sent spy balloons over North America causing a massive freak out. And darn that Justin Trudeau for asking us to shoot one down over Canada.

@inklings There are 1600 meteorological balloons launched EVERY DAY. Innumerable private and commercial and amateur instrumentation packages. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE and have been for DECADES. This goes for Chinese and Russian and U.S. and EU surveillance balloons too. You are watching a POLITICAL SHOW. Nothing more.

@laurenIt does seem like with Google loon-type balloons we have entered a different era though. There has to be a way to discriminate and take the threats out more cheaply. @inklings

@lauren The Chinese balloon shot down was not a weather balloon … although China claimed it was. They’re still determining what the other objects are, but are not being called weather balloons / devices. Pretty sure the Air Force / DOD knows what normal meteorological info gathering devices are.

@inklings None of them were dangerous. And the Chinese balloons are SOP. As are all the tools we use to surveil China -- and believe me, we have far more capability than they do! Don't buy into the propaganda from either side.
