Whether or not you think privacy is important, acting like the worst person you can about it is clearly not the way to go.You wouldn’t say something in a classroom out loud and expect it to be brought up in a job interview five years later, yet that’s what happens with social media posts like this.It’s not about personal privacy at this point, it’s bare minimum human decency

@cassidyclown @jeff @alfredohno @4censord i see both points of view here, but i feel like the rest of yall don't get Hera's point, just because you want something to be visible to people on fedi that you haven't interacted with before doesn't mean you are - *or should be* - okay with it being exposed to as many people as possible. I have published articles publically on my website and been *very* glad for the ability to delete them later. I think it would've been within anyone's right to archive them, but I don't want them to.

There's a difference between preferring something not to occur but acknowledging that it was within someone's right and calling a non-privacy issue an abuse of privacy just because you don't like it. I've posted a lot of cringe on fedi lol. Someone could easily use the API to comb through my posts and make a cassidy cringe compilation - I wouldn't be particularly happy about it but it would be utterly disingenuous to call that an abuse of privacy like Hera is calling it. I knew when I made every post that it was publicly available and theoretically accessible to everyone with an internet connection and would be so forever. Scraping public information is also just inevitable and it's better people learn to accept this sooner rather than later. Targeting someone's public project/implementation isn't going to stop someone else from doing the same thing privately anyway. There's also a lot of cool, non-malicious uses for public data anyway.
