i see both sides on the sex-in-movies debate. i think a younger generation that is virtually bathed in porn from a young age is understandably leery of the kind of "tits-for-tits-sake" nudity in a lot of Miramax-type R-rated movies. "NSFW" also means "not safe to view in front of friends and family."also, we now know that much of the "tits-for-tits-sake" stuff was more about the producers/directors wanting to see an actor's tits rather than the table-pounding bullshit about artistic license.

i don't think it's wrong to have a discussion about the politics and ethics of what happens on movie screens. most reasonable people would agree there **is** an ethical line, the question is where.personally tho, i don't think the discussion about nudity/sex is as important as the (currently non-existent) discussion about the place of guns in American movies and TV shows, which is actually **hugely** consequential to our politics and social values.

it is very, very, VERY common for movies and TV shows to portray guns as the quintessential device for solving problems, settling disputes, and defending one's interests. this has been the case for 100 years and you can't tell me this hasn't had an impact on the way Americans think about guns.

in movies, guns are easy to use, bystanders rarely get shot, injuries are often superficial, children are almost never shot, cops don't use their guns to kill their domestic partners, and suicide by gun is rare.guns are cool. they make you look cool and feel good. the best number of guns to have is a LOT. killing people with a gun is easy and there are no psychological consequences.

we've basically banned cigarettes in most movies and TV shows for reasons similar to the above: depicting cool heroes smoking made cigarettes desirable.guns are often discussed as a public health problem, just like cigarettes, and i don't think it's a terrible idea to start talking about whether, like cigarettes, we they should be glorified in movies as cool and desirable objects of identity.

@peter That would immediately end network tv scripted drama as it’s currently 90% copaganda glorifying police brutality and SWAT teams for every possible type of emergency call. Come on, “liberal Hollywood”, make this happen!

@peter If they start showing that in reality, most deaths caused by guns are suicide, that might make them a little less sexy. Let's make 50% of gun deaths in media suicide, 45% murder then 4.9% being police kills with varying levels of justification and finally .1% being some sort of justified self defense of a civilian.

@jumbanho what if we are NOT all being hunted by Albanian mafia and actually use our guns mainly to shoot off our own dicks? not very cinematic!

@peter goddammit, my $15000 gun collection got stolen and was used by local criminals in 10 armed robberies, 4 drive bys, which led 3 deaths. Will insurance cover that?

@peter I do think we should impose limits on gun use. also I happen to think it's unimaginative to see movies set hundreds of years or more in the future where the main way to eradicate the enemy is guns - bullet, laser, whatever. surely humans and others will come up with other ways to kill!!

@peter in the commentary for Scream, Wes Craven talked about a few of the changes they had to make to get their rating and he pointed out that they were never the removal of violence or making it less brutal/deadly. Instead the changes were always about removing the visceral nature and consequences of violence. The girl is tortured and eviscerated, we just shorten the display. The person still dies, terrified, from a broken neck, we just cut away a little sooner and remove the noise.

@peter I think a show with a Columbo slash Poker Face style non-cop character who defuses situations before they get violent could be a very enjoyable show (and not just in an ideological way)

@peter If there are guns in a film… I won’t go to see it. Period.
