found on the Thames foreshore this morning: a beautiful bone die with crisp carved dot-in-circle pips, typical of dice of the Roman period, 100-200 AD. #mudlarking

to be clear, the dot-in-circle pattern on this die is typical of Roman period in London, but it continued to be used into the post-medieval period. could be anywhere between 900-300 years old. won’t venture a guess at the exact age or even century till it’s been seen by a Finds Liaison Officer at the Museum of London #mudlarking

@jrcarpenter any idea on the kind of bone they favored for crafting dice? Cow? Scot? Mastodon?

someone sent me this photo of Roman dice taken at Palazzo Altemps in Rome three days ago. the die I found on the Thames foreshore yesterday morning looks a whole heck of a lot like the one in the center front row. but we have to wait to see what the museum says #mudlarking

@jrcarpenter Nice! How is it possible that it is so we'll preserved? The corners are still pointy, doesn't it get washed by the river?

@Quantenschaum Thames mud is anaerobic, no oxygen. it’s been in the mud all this time, only just recently eroded out
