Starmer isn't going to promise to take us back into the EU. Why ? Because it isn't possible for years, so he is choking off that political cul-de-sac at source. He is the best one to do it, but he knows he can't deliver it in a first term, so wisely refuses to get drawn in to promising what cannot possibly be delivered.. Shovelling up many tons of number twos, Tory shit, is number one priority. That is going to take all of his first term and well into the second. People have to understand that.

@kennethb I said exactly the same thing in a discussion this morning and I’m hoping we’re both correct in our assumption. Including a return to the EU as a manifesto pledge at the next election would just rehash the arguments of the last election and hand the Tories a huge stick to beat Labour with. My hope would be that a new Labour government would however find some way in the years ahead to re-establish strong trade links with the EU. It’s essential for the growth we need.

@lauriehaley Exactly so. Starmer fought tooth and nail to keep us in the EU. He and we lost. We left, and have to start from scratch as a third country. It is going to take many years. Brexit must be made to work as well as possible in the meantime.

@kennethb It was a decision which should never have been put to a public referendum. The public ( me included) were not well enough informed to make a decision on something which has such far reaching consequences for the well being of our economy for a generation or more. I believe most people voted largely by cherry picking from a spurious list of potential benefits. The EU is not perfect but the world isn’t perfect and now we’re adrift in the world with the Titanic Captain.
