It is obscene that governments effectively require people to have internet connectivity to be able to function in society but abdicate responsibility for ensuring that people actually have that and delegate it to for-profit enterprises instead

@mjg59 this previously happened with the telephone. (Before that I guess there was always paper forms, filled out in person. And the government would make an attempt to teach everyone to read and write, at least in the last ~80-100 years.)FWIW public libraries in particular tend to be the last “government funded” attempt to bridge this gap (ie public access computer/Internet at low/no end user cost).

@mjg59 Out here in the #LuneValley, like an increasing number of rural communities our #broadband is delivered by a community interest, non-profit, which also offers world class #connectivity as opposed to Open Reach's dire service - and our prices have only risen by 10% in around a decade!

@mjg59 > Communication is a fundamental social process, a basic human need, and the foundation of all social organizations. It is central to the Information Society. @mjg59 We try to make it easy by supporting very old devices, unusual devices (like games consoles) and relentless performance optimisation.Ensuring internet availability is unfortunately entirely separate from digital transformation in terms of bureaucracy and political will, though.

@mjg59 it seems that all most govt's want to do anymore is squeeze the poor for all they have and leave them as suffering husks, and because they don't want to be the ones to do the dirty work to get it, they just bring in the companies. Same with health care :(-Ari

@mjg59 depends on the location. The rural county I live in used stimulus money awarded in 2008 to build out fiber to every house connected to the electric grid. It recently got more funding to connect remote off-grid houses. And more work is being done all across Minnesota to connect those that aren't yet connected.

@mjg59 not all governments do this, please speak about your own country. My country has been offering free, high-speed Internet access in universities, public libraries, and other similar places. While it's true that Internet at home is provided by private companies, it is one of the fastest and cheapest in the world. There are families without running water, but they are hooked up to 100 Mbps symmetrical fibre Internet.

@mjg59 That's their plan for the future. Everything you may need to live will be required by law and only available from a private, for-profit provider. That provider will pay big sums to the lawmakers in thanks.

@mjg59 Amen to that. Working the shuttered library on the phones during the pandemic was uniquely horrific. No access to the computers at the library meant that many people lacked the ability to fill out forms and perform other tasks **required** to receive benefits they desperately needed. Not to mention the poor kids expected to do online school and no realistic means to do so. The after school food program continued, at least.

@mjg59 We built a municipally-owned fiber network for our town of 600 people. We connect to a state-owned fiber backbone for backhaul to state-owned data centers which connect to the Internet in several places. We are working with our 5 neighboring towns to build an inter-town mesh with multiple backhaul connections over multiple routes and providers.

@mjg59 The US government, in particular, is just a mechanism to funnel money from the out of its citizen's pockets and up to the top 1%. Anything that sends money the other way goes against the system, and is either outright destroyed, or slowly chipped away at over time.
