According to a New York Public Library pilot, 65-75% of rights holders opted not to renew their copyrights for books published between 1923-1964. How was this determination made? The study required laborious research, using docs from Library of Congress - U.S. Copyright Office & Internet Archive. Learn more about the study & what this means for the historical record of American culture in the fantastic new article from journalist Claire Woodcock @clairewoodcock in VICE: https://www.vice.com/en/article/epzyde/librarians-are-finding-thousands-of-books-no-longer-protected-by-copyright-law

@internetarchive @clairewoodcock This really question: Do we ALL need 70+ years of copyright protection? I talked to my state representative of making copyright expire earlier if copyright holders go inactive. I hate seeing Abandonware, orphaned works, or any works in which the copyright holder is even unwilling to continue enforcing it which makes it pointless to have such copyright lengths. The lobbying for longer copyrights applied to ALL people but for not on what lengths are needed.
