Last week, $4.45M worth of Meta stock was sold by Chief Business Officer Marne Levine. Then after 13 years of working at Meta, she abruptly leaves. This after another round of lay-offs is anticipated.I wonder if the exit was voluntary 🤔https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/13/meta-chief-business-officer-marne-levine-leaving-after-13-years-.html

What Zuckerberg should actually cut is Reality Labs. That, right there, would save them $13.7B a year. But he won't do it because Meta is now chasing losses in an industry that might not be viable for another 10 years. If the Metaverse is ever viable. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/business/article272414863.html

To be sure, I want Meta to die.I don't like it when people lose jobs, not one bit. But I also think Meta is one of the most toxic and evil corporations to exist: one that has enabled genocides. So I hope Meta keeps making this mistake, and Facebook, Instagram, etc. keep dying a slow death.

Always a good feeling to see the evil/stupid going back for another helping of stupid.

@atomicpoet That's why I'm kinda bummed too many people are characterizing this as a twitter substitute. The people who really need to be liberated are the facebook folks. At least twitter was designed by people with a conscience and then acquired by pathological personalities.Facebook was built by pathological people for pathological people from day one and has only gotten more sophisticated with their manipulations.

It’s wild that people are willing to enable a genocidal tech monopoly that makes money from watching everything you do, and then manipulating you with the data they collect because… cat videos!

To be sure, I’m not trying to be smug or dismissive. This is what people literally tell me. Check comments elsewhere in this thread. Obviously, if it was just cat videos, Meta would be a thing of the past. What makes Meta particularly dangerous is how it keeps our friends and family locked away in their walled gardens. It’s horrifying how Meta has built a sense of trust while violating that trust at every turn.

Challenging Twitter is easy. They’re low-hanging fruit. It’s easy to take users from Twitter because the Fediverse reached feature parity with Twitter in all the ways that matter. It’s harder to challenge Meta because their product evolves at a faster clip. But that’s not the only problem. They’ve trained an entire generation of people that the rest of the Internet is scary, and that everything they could ever want or need is hosted by Meta. That’s insidious!

I talk to several of my relatives, many who aren’t tech literate, and they see Meta in an entirely different light. They see Facebook as a safe haven from the rest of the Internet. For example, my mom doesn’t even trust Amazon. But she trusts Facebook. Why? Because she actively sees her friends using Facebook, but not Amazon. She doesn’t need a credit card to use Facebook. And everything “bad” about Facebook is easy to dismiss as someone abusing the service. This outlook may be common.

Everything considered, I think an excellent Facebook replacement can be had if Friendica built more tight integration with email and XMPP. Use email for newsletters, and XMPP for messaging.Won't result in mass adoption, bu any adoption is worthwhile.
