@ocean like yes, we could get a lot more image out of the lens if sensors were circular but it’s easier to make film or sensors rectangular. When you do photography that lets you tilt and shift (especially view cameras) you become very conscious of the “image circle”. One way to think of it is light is free but transistors and chemicals aren’t so it makes more sense to squander the former.

@fristi @ocean because it's a different shape of a lens. Most lenses you see are spherical. This one is anamorphic -- it is itself shaped as a section of a cylinder, and since there is no vertical curvature, it can easily be cut into a rectangle.

@fristi @ocean it is old as you grampa. Anamorphic lenses are popular in cinema, as they were originally invented in order to shoot widescreen movies on an almost square film without having to crop the image. So, the image you shoot on it is squished horizontally, and you need to stretch it back.Today these are mostly used to cool effects like differently shaped lens flare and other stuff.
