Having made popular posts on both here and cohost, I’ve got to say the forum-style comment threads on cohost have done a really good job of cutting down on duplicate replies. Like Twitter, it’s too hard here to see if people have replied to a post with what you want to say yet, so most people just don’t and reply anyway. Which makes reading your own mentions hell if a post gets popular.

@misty there is also the phenomenon where I might look at your post here and see 3 replies, but if I click through to your server I would see 30. this means I could scan literally every visible reply and think mine was unique

@misty Do you think it would help if the reply button / reply interface advertised the number of replies already present?Tusky shows the number of replies a post has even in the basic feed, but the web interface for some reason does not.

@mcc The history of Twitter suggests no, since replies are visible there and it hasn’t stopped people. @darius also points out that the actual number of replies isn’t visible to you from a remote server.

@misty @mcc the number could be available, though! it would be an extra network request, which has a lot of knockon effects that implementors like to avoid, but it's not a hard limit of the network.

@misty @darius I do think this place is actually a little worse about it than Twitter tho lolRe number of replies: Looking more closely, what Tusky generally seems to do is show either "0", "1", or "1+". Is that data you can get without a second query? It seems like considerate people would take the "1+" as a sign there might be a lot of traffic already. If people were considerate. I guess even in Tusky it could be more foregrounded than it is.

@misty elk.zone is a little better interface-wise with displaying threads.bonfirenetworks.org has the best thread display (to my liking at least), but it's not ready to use yet.

@misty @mcc @dariusIndeed because every server can be set up differently regarding blocks or queue management, remote users might never see a certain reply or only with a huge delay, while the user who created the original post will most likely see most replies. Sending a new reply might make sense from a remote user's perspective while it might appear redundant for the creator of the original post who is more likely to see most replies.
