I think "sophomore" is the one English term I'll never get used to. Dunno why but I can never remember what it's supposed to mean.

@tante iirc - it is the term for students which are neither in their first year (freshmen) nor their last year (seniors) of high school.

@tante from the Greek, "wise fool." Used to describe second-year high school or university students. Also used to describe concepts that sound profound but are in actuality very shallow.

Freshman -> Sophomore -> Senior. First year, second year, last year. Never found out if there are curriculums that take longer than three years.

@tante the term "sophomore" is hardly used at all outside North America. Sophomoric is in my vocabulary, but only as a synonym for jejune or pretentious. If I use it in British English I'm taking a chance that my audience will not understand me.

@tante just try to remember it as the academic equivalent of "halbstark".

@tante do you have an ‚o‘ too many in there or have I spelled that word wrong all my life?

@tante Just like people in French using "pénultième" (penultimate) without knowing what it means (it's not "last", it's the one before last)

@tante Sophomores are "wise morons". Or second-year students in an academic system with a typically much more rigid structure than in German universities.
