Behold the tale of a Facebook data scientist fired because he refused to run a little test that his bosses demanded ...... in which he'd update Messenger so that it drained some users' batteries fasterThe data scientist accurately noted that this was unethical as hell -- it could literally endanger people who rely on their phone as a lifelineAs @pluralistic notes, it's part of why "feudal security" -- trusting a big tech firm to keep you safe -- never really works: https://medium.com/@doctorow/when-facebook-came-for-your-battery-feudal-security-failed-c8c1e3beb279

@clive @pluralistic @Citizenkahn thanks. Boosted, shared, and then cleanup up a bunch of apps. Apps are convenient but for most things I can just use a browser. I got safari and Firefox. Firefox gets the untrusted (I stopped using Facebook after the sms collection thing happened a few years back) and safari gets the slightly more trusted.

@clive @smpaley @pluralistic to get real behavioural data.Your phone is likely stuffed with cookies that will feed back a TON of other info seemingly 100% unrelated to Fakebook OR battery life, but potentially interesting to sell you more stuff and/or get even more data from you in future.@pluralistic

@Divinin2000 @pluralistic The phone is the lifeline here, not Facebook … if the phone dies too early because of Facebook’s little experiment, that can be a big problem for people in countries where their phone is a key connector to work, family, etc

@clive @pluralistic Facebook apps generally run terribly on my phone. Instagram doesn't scale correctly to my screen, gets stuck after posting a story needing reset. The other day I discovered posting multiple pictures is just broken entirely. FB has become too sprawling to maintain QAQC

@clive @pluralistic If the phone is used as a phone, there is no vulnerability. Only if it’s used as a tool to access an entertainment media does it become an issue.
