@Penelope Per capita GDP figures do tend to get juiced by a gigantic oilfield and a small population. And anyone who has been to Norway and bought a beer will confirm, it’s purchasing parity per capita GDP that should be used. Sweden makes a better comparison.

@Penelope Norway has made a lot of good choices, but their dirty secret is high revenues from offshore oil and a small population.At least in Norway, oil production subsidises the government, instead of the government subsidising oil production (as is the case in Canada).

@Penelope @jcmacomber Norwegians prosper from fossil fuel exports and hunt and kill whales. Having spent months at a time there I'd say the Norwegians are social libertarians as far as it suits them. You can really feel the racist under current of that place when you don't look like them.

@Andycollier @Penelope @jmlw1 And Norway has 35x as much hydro power per person as the US. I appreciate I'm choosing carefully here, but it all helps with the quality of life. That, and eating lots of fish, I imagine. 😊

Perhaps fjords per person might be a useful statistic for you? Average coastal water depth? Total historical Hanseatic merchants per modern capita. :-) Letters ‘ø’ per person?
