Just to warn everyone, my wife bought me a DSLR camera for my birthday yesterday. (It's not until March 8th but the camera was on sale.) I'll probably be posting way too many pictures, feel free to ignore them.It's quite a learning curve, I haven't used a real camera (just my phone) since the used film. Hopefully my skill improves. @That_One_Guy That link doesn't work.Also, let me explain something that if you didn't know already, will help you out.Your PixelFed and Mastodon accounts have their own username which is linked to the service. For example your Mastodon user name is @ That_One_Guy@ Mastodon.world (I used spaces so that it isn't shortened once posted)Your Pixelfed username will be similar it with a @ name @ instancenameWith your full username anyone can follow you from any service on the Fediverse.

@jujube it's a Canon EOS Rebel T7. They were selling a package containing the camera body, standard lens, telephoto lens, neck strap and bag for $549. She wanted me to find a hobby and suggested photography, then bought a camera.

@nicegnomeI am so far, thank you. I'm trying to find a cleaning kit and having a hard time choosing. I don't plan on cleaning the sensor myself, I think I'll get that done professionally if needed. Just a brush, blower and cloth I guess for lens dust.

@That_One_Guy You might want to learn how shoot manually (no auto settings) to get a feel for the settings. Being able to select aperture, shutter speed and ISO helped me relearn the basics.Since then, I often decide on a priority mode based on need: Shutter priority say for action, aperture priority for depth of field etc.I did lots of practice, especially with depth of field.Good luck and have fun!

@SecularJeffreyI've had the camera for a few days but I'm getting there. I'm using the auto settings to get a feel for it before diving into the manual settings. There's a lot going on so it will be a slow learn.

@SecularJeffreyThat's what I keep telling myself. I was getting frustrated with bad pictures Sunday and had to remind myself I'd been using it for a couple of hours. I hope to have better proficiency by fall.

@SecularJeffreyYou might have made my day with the back button focus suggestion! That's my biggest complaint is holding the shutter button halfway down. I'm still going to learn the rest of the camera but that should help when using automatic mode for sure. Thanks again!
