Approximately 1600 instrumented high altitude weather balloons are released around the world to drift freely -- EVERY DAY.

@lauren what, how is that possible. do they fall to earth quickly and that's why we can still see the sky?

@lauren But they don't drift very far - they are designed to burst, and the payload comes down by parachute.https://www.weather.gov/bmx/kidscorner_weatherballoons

@martinvermeer That is correct. However, every day a significant number misbehave and go MUCH further. Remember, we're talking about more than half a million balloons a year!

@lauren A typical weather balloon lasts around two hours before popping and crashing to earth. They don't last days to weeks.

@ProfCharlesHaas Depends. Of course, we're not counting all the other purposes balloons are sent up, by every country that has the capability to do so.

@lauren I've been somewhat puzzled that so little #balloon press coverage has mentioned Google's Project #Loon.Project Loon used high-altitude balloons, loaded with communications equipment, to provide Internet access in remote areas. It was often noted that Loon's balloons could also be used to monitor local electronic traffic and might even be outfitted with cameras and other sensing devices -- although Google appears not to have intended such a use for them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loon_LLC

@lauren weather balloons are nowhere close to the size of these balloons being shot down. Not a valid comparison.

@sudnadja @martinvermeer Varies widely depending largely on the weather, ironically. I don't think anybody compiles definitive numbers since so many different agencies around the world are involved. But clearly many are lost.

@lauren @martinvermeer That's what I'm trying to get a handle on - what's many? 1/1600 per day? 1599/1600 per day? It's possible that there are decades-old ballons up there still floating around?
