       @grammargirl LLM’s would seem to fall squarely on that person’s area of expertise. In a way, it’s like automated sociolinguistics.

       @grammargirl That seems odd with all of the news about AI &c? I was just listening to Lawfare about chatGPT. They tested it in a number of ways & pretty much declared it to be a "paint-by-numbers" writer. No nuance, & importantly, no citations. Interestingly, they each asked it to write a short profile about themselves. It didn't do a very good job, they said. I'm thinking I'll test that & see what it scrapes from what it can find about me on the internet. I wonder what it would write about you?

       @elaterite Interesting! I just asked it to write my bio, and it got a lot of things right, but incorrectly said I have a master's degree in linguistics from UC Santa Cruz. My degree is not in linguists, and I don't have any degree from Santa Cruz, although I did take a few classes there. I actually have a master's degree in biology from Stanford.I asked it where it got the info about my degree, and it totally backpedaled and told me to do my own research. #chatGPT

       @grammargirl ChatGPT could teach George Santos quite a bit about making up bios. It is not only quite unreliable, but also changes from day to day. This weekend it made up all sorts of specifics when I asked it who Brian Holt Hawthorne is. Today it says it has no info on me, but happily makes up a fake bio anyway.
