Ya' notice how we're not yet hearing reports of aerial shoot downs from other parts of the world? It's not because their skies aren't full of stuff too, it's because they're not behaving like idiots!

@lauren An fighter jet flying for an hour plus an air2air missile cost enough to get someone through college.

@lauren The USSR and the US were exchanging stratospheric spy balloons and spy planes (google "U-2") since the 1950s or so. Those methods have since become less popular because now there are spy satellites, and the both sides have long developed ways to shoot stratospheric things down. >>

@masek @lauren I'd prefer that foreign government don't float surveillance equipment over the country, and Air Force pilots need the practice anyway. I only wish we'd be more frugal about how we shoot them down. Laser sounds promising for popping balloons.

@segv11 @masek We do the same thing around the world. It's been going on for many decades. And most of that stuff isn't for surveillance. Don't buy the excuses now, they're humiliated.

@lauren My favorite story is from the Swiss air force: https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/combat-ready_air-force-working-hours-to-be-discussed/38002494 (afaik this is different now, also, making something float over Switzerland has to be hard given the tiny size :-))

@lauren @masek I doubt we do balloons specifically, but I'm well aware that US surveillance is pretty much ubiquitous. I don't see the surveillance equipment from China as an insult or an act of war, but I believe it's our duty to protect our borders as best we can. While this is an embarrassment to the US, I don't particularly care. Protect your privacy or you lose it.

@masek @lauren You do realize the airspace over Lake Huron is in the flight path of aircraft traveling to/from Detroit DTW and Toronto YYZ, the 19th and 20th largest airports in North America, yes? What's the cost of a full aircraft downed by foreign objects in their flight path?

@femme_mal @masek So you *really* believe that all of the sudden there are all these new thingies up there, in all these different shapes and sizes that have to be shot down? Eh? Or ... maybe, it's that they've always been there and when it hasn't been so political there would just be advisories put out rather than shooting everything down to look really tough? Hmm?

@lauren @masek Did I say that I expected all objects in airspace to be shot down? Point to where I said that. The White House, DOD, Canada, and NORAD jointly felt the object posed a risk. I'd rather not be on a flight in/out of either of those airports wondering if that risk was still out there. Can't even begin to imagine the whining about commercial shipping disrupted by a ground halt while the object clears airspace.BTW, I live within an hour's drive of where the object was shot down.

@femme_mal @masek I didn't say anything about all objects, I'm referring to these particular objects.

@lauren has anyone established where the first balloon object came from? How is it that it was not noticed before it got to the West Coast? Was it launced from someone’s backyard?
