Apparently a Canadian didn't like me referring to Canada as a puppet of the United States, when I mentioned that it was a U.S. jet that shot down the latest uber-scary-flying-object -- this time over Canada. So he informed me that he unfollowed me. I rejoice in his newfound freedom from my posts.

@lauren I think people don't like being reminded about the structures that put Canadian forces under US control (like NORAD). I wonder how Europeans feel about NATO troops being under the command of an American General

@lauren Wouldn't the fact that Trudeau ordered it make the US a puppet of Canada?

@lauren Americans really don't understand how it feels to be politically and culturally dominated. American soft colonialism has had a huge impact on the anglophone world.I haven't worked out how to explain this to my American wife. It's (literally) a foreign experience...

@briansullivan So in BDSM terms, would that be "topping from the bottom"? In any case, there's "ordered" ... and then there's "ordered".

@ian @lauren The closest I've gotten is having a good international friend explain to me how much he despises the fact that he has to care, from half a world away, about any opinion Donald Trump has on anything, and he feels like we *did* that to him.I can't disagree with that feeling.

@peepstein @lauren hard to imagine the US allowing troops to be under allied control, there is reason why NATO & NORAD just happens to always have an American at the top https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_50110.htm#:~:text=The%20current%20SACEUR%20is%20General,Casteau%2C%20near%20Mons%2C%20Belgium. and https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_of_NORAD

@SethKaplan @lauren technically the NORAD agreement says that NORAD operational control falls to the Deputy Commander of NORAD if the commander is unavailable / incapacitated / unable to command, etc. the Deputy is always a Canadian officer.

@SethKaplan @lauren I suppose one could argue that in that case, US officers would elect to not follow NORAD-given orders. In that case, NORAD is effectively dead and the joint co-operation between Canada and the US for air defence would be severed.

@lauren Canada isn't a lackey of the USA, they just independently choose to do whatever the US wants them to do, of their own free will.

@lauren I like following you and I'll continue to do so, but you're just wrong. NORAD has existed for like 65 years, and there are plenty of instances of Canadian jets working US airspace. Nothing weird about a NORAD patrol being US jets.https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/10/politics/us-canada-jets-intercept-russia-alaska/index.html

@lauren You called Canada a puppet of the US because US aircraft intercepted this balloon in Canadian airspace. Was the US a puppet of Canada when CF-18s intercepted Russian aircraft in US airspace? My point is that I see no reason to believe Canada isn't contributing to NORAD in a way that rises above "puppet" status.
