When I’ve had enough of my iPhone, I have a “blackout” focus mode. It shuts off my notifications, sets all of my home screens as just black, turns my phone silent etc. It’s fantastic way of instant raise the drawbridge when it’s needed. #ios #focusmodes

@nickycolman that’s really cool, do you still use your phone in this mode or is it more “put me down and do something else” type of thing?

@rob yeah, it’s more the latter. It’s like a mechanism I use when I want the phone/watch/iPad to just sink into the background. I have set it up that a few core people can get through it, like my parents. But everything else is hidden. It really helps at times!

@nickycolman 10/10 recommend this approach. I use the app screentime to essentially do the same thing 8.30-5.30 on work days.By default I only allow notifications from WhatsApp, FindMy, my home alarm and my banking app so my phone may only disturb me if it’s needed. Had it set up like this for years now, I feel my heart rate increase when I see other people’s phones/watches pinging them all the time.

@nickycolman I have three tiers of focus modes to accomplish a similar thing. “Social” lets most friend notifications through including all texts and discord, “introvert” only lets my closest friends through, and “mindfulness” shuts it all down (so nice for being in the moment, whether alone or with people)

@felixsedai that’s a good idea! Although I think I’d have to be actively aware of whether I want to socialise which I might not always know 😅Blackout is more of a “IM DONE!” response, followed only by turning my phone off!So glad we have these features now.

@noccor absolutely! I wonder why so many friends and family are overwhelmed! This is probably a contributing factor. I also do the screen time trick to limit websites and also sites I have an addiction to (such as news). I set them at 1 minute so I can quickly grab the headlines, but never doomscroll. I’m so grateful to have these features!

@nickycolman that’s “mindfulness” for me with a cute little leaf icon and all my home screens hidden; framing is everything 😉😂

@felixsedai yes! When I do Headspace each morning, I have an automation trigger that silences my phone / notifications so I can continue in peace. Once I’ve finished, the automation then reactivates my required focus mode for the day. That’s also a big help! 👌🏻

@nickycolman that’s smort, I should see about linking a focus to Oak. this is also a good reminder overall bc I haven’t sat with my breath in a couple weeks now 😶

@nickycolman In addition to certain quiet scenarios I also have different homescreens depending on the focus. For the night, the homescreen is reduced to some few apps. Work and Commute is similar and useful widgets help. Screen Time has never helped as I tend to override the warning. 😕How do you activate them? I think we should also open a #Shortcuts thread, as I find that super interesting.

@awesomeknight oh I love Shortcuts! I use them all the time. My different focus modes are activated differently. Mon-Fri my work one activates on my working hours. I have one that activates when I meditate and then turns off. But then there’s blackout mode which I manually activate 🙂

@nickycolman I have something similar before bed. Subdued colours and and reduced apps no notifications Quite effective
