Over 25,000 people killed in Turkey and Syria by the earthquake, and the U.S. and its puppet Canada are shooting at balloons, like at a fun fair booth. Almost like they're trying to divert our attention, eh?

@lauren Trying to wrest control of some narrative. Create a phantom balloon enemy so Americans band together.

@lauren I'm going to go out on a limb and say "they" might not be monolithic, nor is the "what" a single thing... it's almost like there are competing (self-interested) narratives...

@pjfasano Don't overthink it. Much of this is herd behavior.

@pjfasano The conspiracies we need to worry about are the ones nobody ever hears about, so there are no conspiracy theories about them.

@lauren At what point is that just a statement of "people(/groups/corporations/governments) do things which are in their self interest"?

@lauren I assumed it was bureaucratic inertia - once an executive notices something, the underlings make a mission out of it for a while just to "demonstrate leadership" or effectiveness or whatever

@lauren @petrescatraian In the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in the Indian ocean that killed over 200,000 people was there an attempt to divert attention away from it? Can 2 things happen at the same time that aren't related?Generally, when I think of times that the government is trying to divert attention away, it's to hide politicians' bad behavior. I see no motivation to divert attention away from a natural disaster that is the fault of nobody.

@lauren Canada's military is in such bad shape - understaffed, under-equipped, equipment that can't be used because it's way behind on maintenance - that we couldn't even send the DART team (emergency-response, search and rescue unit that has traditionally been very, very good at exactly this kind of situation). Normally, they'd be able to field a 200-person unit and equipment on 24 hours' notice. It's disgraceful.

@jobotics @petrescatraian Two decades ago is of historical interest. This is 2023. And *where* the earthquake took place is of particular relevance when considering government and media reactions here.

@lauren @petrescatraian So your view is because the earthquake happened in an Arab country, there is an attempt to distract due to racism? I can respect that view but I don't agree with it.

@jobotics @petrescatraian It's even more complicated than that. Honestly, I don't have time for this discussion right now. As details of the flying object shootdowns become clear the political aspects will be more obvious and shed light on this and related issues.

@lauren I wasn't talking about money either. I was talking about actual rescuers being sent out there to help (as this graph is about as well, but doesn't show the numbers). There was a graph with how many firefighters each country sent in Turkey (which I could not find, I remember it was on r/europe if I'm not mistaken). US was on the top with a few hundred people sent over (I'll update my comment if I ever come across it again).
