#Knowsley #Liverpool Tonight that mob came to this hotel which is currently being used to house refugees to protest at the presence of refugees in the city. They say they did this to defend the British way of life; in fact they set fire to a police van, attacked the police and then tried to attack our peaceful counter-protest. Attacking those who uphold the country’s laws seems a funny way to defend said country. #refugees https://care4calais.org/news/far-right-riots-at-liverpool-hotel/

@davidstirrup What the mob did in Liverpool was appalling but I reserve judgement on the police, who in other circumstances arrest those who protest against this appalling government, and are institutionally racist and corrupt. The fact that I'm thinking and writing that one must not have unqualified trust in the actions of the police shows just how appalling the situation has become in the dis-United Kingdom.

@adrianfry @davidstirrup I think the truth of this post is an important one. One we really fear to bring to the fore, because it refuses easy solutions. Because it compels us to look at just how destabilising this government has been to basic matters of trust.

@Remittancegirl @davidstirrupHaving thought further about the disturbance in Liverpool, it occurred to me that the mob probably believed their actions to be in harmony with the 'hostile environment' policies and rhetoric of Braverman and her predecessor Patel. Thus they may have been genuinely surprised by the police response, and fought against them because they believed that the police were acting against the government?
