Ok I need some advice. Which of these 70s movies should I watch next? I picked three with one-word titles because the symmetry pleases me. 😁

This is two 70s movies in one week where Kenneth McMillan has a small character role … all in preparation for his magnum opus as Baron Harkonnen in Lynch’s Dune.

Serpico’s musical score is … weirdly old fashioned? Awful lot of weepy strings & whatnot for a naturalistic, gritty police flick.

First, I didn’t realize this was so late in the 70s. I could’ve sworn it was much earlier. But I think I’m remembering when I first heard the 1975 hit song (and 7 years old feels way different than 10).Also, I don’t think I ever realized this was a Peckinpah movie.

So the song came out in 75. But then Smokey and the Bandit was released in 77, a year before Convoy the Movie. Feels like there are influences from Burt’s classic, but I wonder … seems like Convoy must’ve been written at least before Bandit came out?

It is kinda interesting how many movies in the 70s were about outlaw-like freewheeling characters making fools out of cops. When now, the culture has shifted toward these types of personalities being all ā€œthin blue lineā€ and whatnot.

Growing up there were actors that I, even as a pretty young kid, instinctively recognized as having a vibe that was ā€œcool.ā€ I mean in the original sense of collected, detached, but wryly amused. Or something like that. Donald Sutherland is a perfect example.

@xian @Andrewhinton gorgeous. That was like the one song I ever learned to play on guitar.

Also extra creepy for some reason that almost everyone is dressed in late 70s corporate casual?

Iā€˜ve read there’s a lot of Heidegger influence in this story but there’s a lot of Wittgenstein knocking around in this fly bottle too.

I’d I’m not mistaken, the movie holds off on showing you a pod person actually do the scary scream-pointing until nearly the very end. (vs just hearing it)

I completely identify with Chance’s instinct to wander away from a funeral in progress to walk in the woods. Also maybe the most perfect ending of any film ever.

The point of view sleight-of-hand at the end is really deft. You think you’re following the protagonist but you don’t know he’s a pod till we switch to Nancy’s pov. Then it’s too late. And we enter the void.

Aces all around. Just the purest distillation of paranoia. No compromises & no quarter. But now I wanna (re)watch more Philip Kaufman movies.

Reading more about Body Snatchers (1978) I learn: the twist ending was kept a secret from everyone except the few who needed to know (!); and Kaufman cast Nimoy as the jerk shrink in part to help him break out of his typecast Spock trap ā¤ļø

@gretared @Andrewhinton you are too kind … the song pretty much plays itself … the fun part was finding the arpeggiated ukulele licks. I have tapes of rehearsals working through various approaches and then that one emerges and it just stayed as my way to play it.I still warm up with that tune a lot. Don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.

@Andrewhinton I saw that in the theatre when I was 11. Had a profound affect on me.
