so, printer mods:* umbilical for toolhead wires* voron tap (nozzle tip probing!)* went from single mgn9 on the x axis to mgn12 because that’s what the tap is designed forproblem now is the x axis is pretty heavy, which limits the acceleration i can achieve without the gantry flying off into low earth orbit from inertia. yeah, kinda signed up for that with a 350 build, but i’m still considering a lightweight replacement for the aluminum 20x20 profile

@mia I’ve used 10x20 profiles i found at Dold Mechatronik for my pen plotter before. You could also look for more exotic bent steel sheet profiles, though I have much less experience with those. I’m sure you can find some super light stuff from misumi or other brands at McMaster-Carr.

@dunkalino@mastodon.social already using misumi profiles (mostly due to tolerances with the frame, which isn’t that important with the gantry).pic is what i’m looking at. you can actually buy those premade for different voron build sizes. doesn’t get much lighter than that without sacrificing rigidity. even carbon fiber pultrusions are heavier

@dunkalino@mastodon.social though carbon fiber has an important advantage: no heat warping. that’s the reason i’m skeptical about those aluminum profiles, especially when they’re right up against a steel linear rail. it’s a known problem that the two will expand differently and flex a bit (enough to show up in prints/bed mesh probing)

@mia i saw those on AliExpress. I was debating buying one for my Voron 0, because the last time I saw such an intricate gantry beam E3D charged an arm and a leg for it and this one was like less than fifty bucks, right? They somehow still look heavy to my eyes, but then I’ve only ever chosen profiles by feel (nach Bauchgefühl, like most architects 😅).Your setup looks incredible btw!

@mia @dunkalino I really wonder how the carbon fiber extrusions on the Bambu labs are going to hold up over time. They are both abrasive and themselves not very wear resistant

@mia I’ve found one that looks about right to my eyes. Also it seems to be made of steel so perhaps that lessens the heat expansion differential. Plus it’s super cheap!

@dunkalino@mastodon.social pretty sure it’s aluminum though
