So really there are only two possibilities: (a) All of the sudden somebody or somebodies are launching all sorts of new airborne stuff in different sizes and shapes some with antennas and some without. *** OR *** This kind of stuff has been going on for years and now for political reasons leaders feel obligated to shoot at everything that moves in the air that most people don't ordinarily care about. I vote for (b).

@lauren Our defense minister is about to hold a presser on this latest object. I assume that question will be asked. I assume it will not be answered.

@lauren These events are fun to watch before they are officially live - mics are still on, as you hear reporters chatting, speaker phones, etc. And then a countdown by somebody at the podium - 10,9,8,7 etc.. Then he left. Empty again. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/norad-monitoring-airborne-object-north-1.6745575

@lauren For 80 years or so weather balloons have been traversing the globe. Often without advance notice. Wouldn’t want to be a mid continent weather researcher right now. Or tornado chaser.

@lauren @WhistlingStella Besides the monetary cost of scrambling fighters and firing missiles, there's a potential national security cost. The US and Canada should be free to handle these incidents in whatever way best serves their shared best interest, instead of having their hands forced by what amounts to a Republican Party attack on both countries' national security.

@lauren how about new detection techniques making the “ignore it” strategy less tenable?

@disappearinjon There's no new detection stuff involved. This is only happening because the original balloon story got crazy inflated. No pun intended.

@lauren I think its a combination of your "theory-(b)", coupled with red faced NORAD folk who didn't detect the Chinese balloon, have now tweaked their radar filters so they can see "anomolies".Lauren's Theory (b): This kind of stuff has been going on for years and now for political reasons leaders feel obligated to shoot at everything that moves in the air that most people don't ordinarily care about.
