       oh wow, I just made a little bit of math and just realizedCPUs are not that expensive to manufacture……

       Very crude numbers: this means that, for two Zen 3 CCDs (so a 5950X), worst case scenario according to the estimates I could gather is a cost of… $28.57 for the computey part (not counting I/O die nor packaging)

       I cannot imagine the whole thing costing more than double the CCDs themselves, so a chip that came out at $799 and is still at ~$500 would generate a shitton of income beyond manufacturing costs :thinksphere: I mean it’s expensive to manufacture, but not that much

       Like, no shit AMD can achieve 42% gross margin profit, they have a ton f margin to get there

       @xerz This is why ARM and RISC-V's rise to popularity in the desktop market is really great. The duopoly lets Intel and AMD get away with this shit

       @vijf @xerz You still need a shitton money in μArch R&D, a license-free arch doesn’t solve that.

       @frumble @vijf welp, particularly in the case of RISC-V, it can actually help ‒ there’s less instructions to break down into ops, and CPU vendors can share as much technology as they want, including CPU core designs with their own µops for the standardized instruction sets :blobcatthink:

       @frumble @xerz The cost savings of a license-free IA isn't what I'm getting at here, just that there will be a lot more players in the game in the future
