@killyourfm on one server I was on, they posted their monthly costs, the number of people who donated, and the total money that was collected.If those numbers I saw hold true for most instances, your donation, however small, makes a real and meaningful difference. Please consider giving if you're in a position where you can.

@mforester @AspenPWD My impression is that many instances don’t have a prominent appeal for donations. Sometimes it’s buried within an About page; itself buried in a small footer. The only reliable way to receive donations from your audience is to ask them in a very direct way.

But in our case the instance admin sends out links to a transparency report every month and concludes the message with "any small amount helps".Not everybody might look into the local timeline (oftentimes that includes me), but I find it bad practice to not follow your instance admin or any management account. How will you find out about maintenance times or service issues?So if everybody reads this, I find it wild that so few donate.

@killyourfm The $8 a long that Elon asked for has been going to my instance through Oatreon instead for the past three months. I’m thinking about seeing which are the top five servers my mutuals come from, and if they have Patreons or similar, starting to kick a buck a month in each of their directions, as well.

Let me use an #OpenSource project I'm involved in - @thunderbird - to demonstrate the importance of simply asking for donations. In Dec 2022, for the 1st time, we introduced a one-time, in-app appeal. When our users updated to the newest release, their default browser opened the page I've attached. They only saw this page ONCE. We received an astounding $3.5m in donations, doubling our 2022 revenue goal in one month. It was the project's biggest month in history. #FOSS #Linux #Funding

@killyourfm There are also projects like core-js maintained by a single person, used by everyone, but without almost any donations, and then it leads to this. https://github.com/zloirock/core-js/blob/master/docs/2023-02-14-so-whats-next.mdIt made me rethink how I use software. More donations coming, and more contributions.

@justinz @killyourfm @thunderbird Not sure if they already completely moved away from XUL, which utilizes GTK on Linux, but read a while ago somewhere there were plans to follow firefox to base it on web technology. Again, this info was a while back and I haven"t followed news since, because I don't use tb on my KDE Plasma Desktop.

@killyourfm @thunderbird This model works really well for software with a lot of end-user eyeballs. Krita, for example, also well-funded. But it really doesn't work out so well for libraries and toolchain and supporting bits.

@killyourfm I ran for office, and my campaign manager told me I would have to continually ask for money. I thought that surely people who supported what I was doing would donate. They did - for about one day. Making the ask is so important!
