What I really can't understand, is that open source projects often use #proprietary #Discord @elk you build an open source client for the open source #decentral network #Mastodon . Why do you not offering a decentral chat room like @matrix #Matrix #redecentralize

@buzzdee @elk @matrix Because it isn't just an open source vs. propietary issue. The Matrix/Element team has had an issue sitting for YEARS about dedicated voice channels, an absolutely fundamental feature of Discord, willfully ignored. You can't push your alternative if it has no intention to provide a compatible alternative in the first place.Spaces were the most important missing feature, now there needs to be major UX improvements (it's still a confusing mix of Discord and a glorified IRC client) and fundamental features implemented, otherwise no amount of whining is going to make people want to ditch Discord. You can't whine people in to switching to incompatible alternatives.

@Ninmi @buzzdee @elk fwiw element added video rooms in july (https://element.io/blog/drop-in-drop-out-chats-with-video-rooms-and-a-new-search-experience/amp/); if you mute video, you have voice rooms. dedicated voice UI is due in the coming months.

@buzzdee @elk @matrix The number of people willing to work on infrastructure is not infinite. In fact, it is very limited. With my fedora-infrastructure hat on - we must very often sacrifice some ideals to keep the infrastructure running. But we always welcome any volunteer willing to maintain new services based on open-source.
