tried to unify my chat clients. matrix is terrible and services hate third party clients. now im thinking about working on my Other (eventually chat-including) project.

@nik I really hate that comic, it's so often used to justify a shitty status quo and discourage people from trying to make things better

i do still need a unified interface...i accept that there will always be someone on another platform and i hate having 6 completely separate interfaces for doing the same exact thing (exchanging text messages)

@nik i think about it like.. what's a good general way to think about chat or whatever. together, what further generalizations can be made, &c. it ends up in a very linguistic place for me. so it isn't really about a protocol in the traditional sense. haiku works really hard to make everything utilize the same system services, plan9 does this fanatically with all its text interfaces. there's a hint of something there, i think.. at the end, i want to have an end-user programming environment that can pull from a bunch of different services, which users can totally customize to suit their needs. that would be so fucking cool.practically though, swapping apps between is a lot less work than bridges. at least until someone cracks the above or finds an even better way to solve the puzzle.
