💯 percent agree: "And yes, as @mmasnick points out, and his chart eloquently shows, Mastodon numbers are far higher than they were before Elon Musk acquired Twitter. It is correct to note the impressive growth as user numbers climbed over three months from 600k to 2.6 million. That’s despite briefly hitting a higher peak....Mastodon doesn’t have to be bigger than Twitter to be important. It doesn’t have a commercial imperative to be big."https://billbennett.co.nz/slumping-towards-a-fediverse/

@mmasnick I have always felt that if #Mastodon and the larger #Fediverse can get to 10% of all monthly social network users, it will hit a strategic goal, and tipping point, that will get later on to the next stage and keep all the other non-open silo-based social media networks feet to the fire. Like early #Firefox did to #InternetExplorer, or #WordPress did to closed CMS's. Or now #Signal is doing to proprietary Messaging.

@tchambers @mmasnick The framing of all of these stories miss a crucial point: of the Mastodon users that did stay active, a large majority will not return to Twitter. Continuing to post exclusively on Twitter is NOT going to reach the Mastodon audience. How marketing departments are missing this is beyond me.

@Hey_Beth @tchambers @mmasnick As I noted the other day, I think this is Mastodon’s golden hour. Everything is working well (thanks @stux !) and interactions here extremely positive.I don’t think it can ever sink as far as Twitter (federation for the win) but I think the earliest migrants are the people who most wanted something good, and they are making it happen.

@EdSanders @Hey_Beth @tchambers @mmasnick Most certainly noty all new people have sticked around but that's normal :cat_hug_triangle: In the past years ive seen a few big 'migrations' but this one was the biggest still! For example, on mstdn.social a few months a go the average active users where between 5 and 10K per month and now that's 30-40K (currently)
