@stux Consumer Reports did a great write up about this trend in the mid '90s.

@stux I really hate shopping, so I buy quality clothes (or anything) on sale, so it lasts a long time. You can't buy cheap stuff and expect it to be quality. Cheap stuff costs a lot more in the long run.

@stux This is such a simplified view, it's basically wrong. First, it's not just functionality, design and manufacturing that are concerns, but also quality. With quality being the hardest to quantify.Combine this with the unwillingness of most people to pay anything for quality, guess what gets thrown out first. It is the consumers fault when they select the 10€ shit when they could have something that lasts many times as long for 15€. But those 5€ more mean that nobody buys it.

@attilakinali I think it's both 😉 A great example for this are light bulbsThey could last for many many years but producers chose not to

@stux Yes, but people didn't revolt either. They just accepted it.... That and the illegal cartel that the light bulb mafia started.

@stux Repairs fill almost all of my spare time. It's even more expensive than buying new shit. Are you prepared to follow this kind of repair-by-yourself lifestyle?

@stuxGotta find the smaller companies. I buy jeans from "Texas Jeans" (oddly based in the Carolinas) that are US cotton, US weaving, US manufacturer. They're made like the jeans I wore as a kid. Heavy weight denim, comfy, and only like $35.

@stux I gave a talk about this trend last year at the university of Madison’s MD+I program. Designers and companies of these products need to change their model to be more ethical and responsible because the impact of the waste is so damaging to society and how they need to think about the ethics during the creation, use, and end od life of products.

@stux STOP BUYING SO MUCH!! Buy cheap, buy twice. To fix this, do research and buy quality of quantity. You don't need a new drink tumbler every year, they could last 20-30 years! A 10 year old laptop often work plenty well for most for general web browser or office tasks, especially if you install Linux. And right-to-repair is SOOO important. You own it. Fix it.

@stux I always think the word "consumer" is funny. It says the inside thing out loud! You cant consume a product if it lasts forever 😆 .My grandma still has a fridge from the 1940s (atomic design blue and all). Sure it shocks the crap out of you when you use it barefoot (its a 2 prong non-grounded outlet), but it still works!!!I have a 8 year old fridge and had to have it repaired last year!
