so far the only annoying part about here is browsing through ppl/posts from other servers. like science server has seemingly some time restriction on older posts visibility? unless you jump to that server separately or smth and then copy paste links to search bar

@bon_balaur Yeah, what's happening is that Sauropods.win purges older posts after a period or the storage costs balloon.

@john aaaaah! That's what's happening! So it's because the server I'm on, not the other?

@bon_balaur Yes, nearly all Mastodon servers do it. It's kinda a necessary part of the way Mastodon works. Every little server can't know everything or hold everything forever.

@john that's sort of obvious now that I think of this, but also somewhat sad - like inevitable death of old websites :")

@bon_balaur The original server do keep the posts though, so they aren't gone forever. Search in Mastodon is very limited by design (there's a lot of controversy about this). Finding things on Mastodon is probably best done with a search engine a lot of the time.

@john @bon_balaur this, for me, is the one thing about Mastodon I continue to struggle to come to terms with. I want to easily find content, and I want my content to be easily found by anyone who may be interested in it. You know, otherwise, I wouldn’t post it.

@AdamStuartSmith @john eh... I feel you - in the sense I am tempted to try and use it as I used Twitter, incl as a gallery for my works/place to share and promote my work. But at least for now I'll use Tumblr and insta as galleries, and mastodon as smth that it offers - a microblog for rants and communication with ppl. I think it's in some senses even nice - to drop the constant urge to think of promotion and just focus on communication. And that communicating here is similar to irl-no backup.

@bon_balaur @AdamStuartSmith You guys might be interested to know that I am planning something that solves some of this: a gallery front-end to Mastodon. It will look something like Artstation to outsiders, but it will integrate your existing Mastodon account to provide likes and comments, and you'll be able to post directly from it to your account.I'm going to use it for my own site at first, and then open source it.
