@TedUnderwood Or maybe it will be like the question "What is life?" where the question itself comes to seem less interesting and more merely verbal as we develop a more nuanced understanding of the mechanics governing the range of observable phenomena. One can hope!

@algal I earnestly hope you're right. They really did spend a lot of time arguing about the nature of life in the 18c & 19c, and we do seem to have outgrown it — so, fingers crossed!
