Want to embed a stream of your Mastodon posts on a website? Want to turn a thread or a bunch of comments into an article? I made some templates for y'all! https://patrickcurry.com/socials/mastodon/tools/

@patrickmcurry @kentbrew these are really cool!I love how the thing where every Mastodon server exposes a CORS-enabled JSON API means there's all kinds of potential for building neat client-side integrations on top, without needing to run a server at all See also https://elk.zone/ and the like

@simon @kentbrew Thanks y’all! I’m still working on some improvements and variations. I’d like to be able to support more flavors of ActivityPub services too.

@simon @patrickmcurry yes, exactly! Now we can all roll our own sketchy third-party JavaScript widgets! 😆

@kentbrew @patrickmcurry at least we don't have to use as JSON-P to fetch executable data from random domains any more!

@patrickmcurry @simon @kentbrew I would like to evaluate the feasibility of the following: Instead of my server fielding posts on my behalf & then serving me, why not it proxy (if), but the ext server serve the content directly to my browser. I think this embedding tech would help. Any thoughts? The benefit is my server does not have to store, monitor & the post is stored in only one place & under the control of the author.

@aswath @patrickmcurry @kentbrew my understanding of Mastodon technical culture is that it's been designed to avoid people hitting each other's instances habitually to read content - mainly as a scaling thing, to avoid popular posts causing traffic surgesSo while you could get something like this to work, it would be against the grain of how the network is designed to work and usually operates

@simon @patrickmcurry @kentbrew Thanks. If single (or low) user instances dominate this may not be an issue? Also, I understand admins can clear cache at their choice and some RPi admins have indicated that they have set it for 24 hrs. They will effectively be equivalent to direct access, I would think. In any event if that is the design philosophy then that is what it is.

@aswath @patrickmcurry @kentbrew as a user of a single-user instance I really feel the pain of not having a large cache of the fediverse on my local instance, so I've often thought I'd be better off hitting APIs on other instances directlyI might still end up doing that some day! But it definitely goes against the grain of how Mastodon is expected to work

@simon @patrickmcurry @kentbrew You are a good candidate to ask the flip q. As a publisher with a sizable following, I would think your server will be hit harder if indiv access directly. I suspect that as pub, you would prefer the current scheme. How will you rate the trade-off?(Apologies if I doing the ping-pong a bit long. I am learning though. Thanks)

@simon @aswath @patrickmcurry this is why I have not already written and released a suite of fun embeddable widgets for Mastodon: I don't see how to do it without clobbering someone else's instance if the page goes viral. Maybe if I had my own instance and only embedded content from there?
