       #NewYorkTimes has bad US political coverage and awful labor practices, but they got a million new paid subscribers last year and are proving that #paywalls work. The smart people #BusinessModel of give it away for free and make it up in volume does not and selling advertising only makes the  customers the product.  I don't know what that means for Mastodon, which is largely not-for-profit right now, but it means something.  @shoq

       I don't believe that proves paywalls work. It just proves they work for enormous metropolitan newspaper titans with massive subscriber bases to start with. The econometrics just don't work for most retail journalism. The Fediverse can potentially be the platform for reinventing journalism, because it's young, impressionable, decentralized, and fluid. And most of all, because it's here. Few other models exist. Anywhere.
